Wonder if somebody could help, ive given up on what could be causing it. Seems my start up menus seem to go missing for some odd reason (only the shorcut files in program menu, eg windows media player, outlook express, msn....
Ive tried so many things so i just formated and reinstalled windows. Few hours later it start happening again, so far neither norton antivirus, spy sweeper or avg could detect anything. Ive backed up the shortcuts but every tiume i restart they go missing and they replaced with a shorcut file which leads to the desktop???
Any suggestions

virus

have you tried to open windows in safe mode and see if it does the same boosting you could do a system restore and restore the computer to when it was working

avivra free edition will delete the file also if you want i could get u a serial number for any program that is not free u want to try liam

Hows it going boosting?
So after you did a format did it resolve the issue then it started to happen again?? Was the format a destructive one or a repair of windows i.e did you lose all your data and applications you installed from the system??
It seems like a virus of some sort to me but if you did a destructive format that should have resolved the issue completely, I would recomended downloading Avast 4 Home edition and run that along with Super Anti-Spyware to see if anything comes up, just google them and it will bring you to the downloads for them.
Also how did you do a format did you use discs or was it a built in partition??

Ok ive tried the system restore, that did restore the shorct menus but shortly they disapeared again few hours later!!
The format process was, i have two partions, both were deleted and created back into one. With full ntfs format using windows xp cd (custom built pc).

Is the copy of Windows a valid copy or is it a custom built one aswell??
When you did the format did you test the computer without installing any programs or going online, this will determine if its something you installed or a virus.
Also did you run automatic updates after the format?? Because if a system restore resolved the issue for a few hours, that will remove any recent updates. Then after a few hours they downloaded again so try turning off automatic updates through the control panel.
Let me know

Is the problem resolved now then after installing Vista? There is a few problems with SP1 for Vista but overall not a bad operating system ;) Christy

What sound card do you have in your system?? Have you checked the manufacturer website for an updated driver??
Christy

Its intrigated sound card, part of the motherboard, called SoundMax Digital intrigated.
Vista have provided it with realtek digital 97 ac,97 which only support 2 channel on digital but on normal, the 5 channels dont sound right as the bass is not crips.
May just consider buying a creative sound blaster which full support vista.

Yeah you wont really get that good sound quality with onboard sound anyway. I would recomend the sound blaster its a great sound card and they dont have much known faults from my experience.
