looking at using mesh instead of running an air filter, would mesh out a kitchen sieve do the job?

Yes it would do mate. Any smaller mesh & youll probably end up restricting it rather than helping it. Your still likely to get dust & smaller pieces of shit go through tho, which is why people use filters...
