Unstable RPM before the choke kicks out.

Hi, my name is Thomas

I have a problem with my 1992 starlet 1.3xli 2E-Engine 12v EFI, the rpm is verry unstable when the choke is in. When it reaches 2000rpm the rpm needle is going up and down like the engine is chasing (I am sorry, that I dont have a better word for this, hope you understand).
The engine is not modified.

I have checked:
-Air filter
-Coolant lvl
-Spark plugs
-Loose cables

I have noticed that if you get some vibration in the car when it is cold this happens easier.
And also the fuel consumption have have increased from 0.7 to 0.9l/mile.

Thank you for posting comments, everything helps.

Cheers guys :)

gunk build-up

have you had any work done on the motor mate..? also, if it's an old engine, you most likely have lots of gunk in your intake tract.. :(
i know it's not the same engine but this was the sorry state of my intake air temp when i got my car.. so you can imagine how the rest of the intake looked like.. :/

i cleaned everything up and now it runs sweet -- also because i vented the crankcase breathers to my custom catch-can..

Sorry for the late reply, i will try this as fast as i got some spare time. But did you only clean the sensor? or did you disconnect everything, to clean inside?

Have you checked the condition of the air filter? It may need replacing if it's not been changed for a while.

When the engine is up to temperature does the car drive OK? Is there any loss of performance or any noticeable increase in fuel consumption?

looks like your fuel vapor venting system mista Starlet.. :)

Thank you for the reply :)

Some extra questions:

-Do you know if it is possible to overhaul this?
-And how to test if this vapour venting system is working properly?
-Is it possible that this vapour system can cause the rpm engine chasing....?

Thank you for any comment :)

cheers.
