I have checked for the fault codes - the only code I [EVER] had was 34 when I had the boost creep, when it was set to 0.8 bar and the cold weather would result in the creep, throwing the code. Apart from that - nothing! Checked the ECU many times since then and it's clear. I run 0.7 bar now.

One thing I should add to the above, use only a digital multimeter to measure the voltage at the ECU terminals, using a analogue meter could cause damage to the ECU.

You were right as usual!

The idle was 0.62 V. Which is like you said with in tolerances. But when I get the car to the full throttle it was just 1.64 V. It did increase gradually though -)))

Just to confirm if I have done everything correctly - and if it's right - it can be used as a tutorial - I provide the pics! For those who doesn't know - the ECU is located behind the glovebox.

Just found that the TPS sensor on the auto is different to the manual. Do you think it would have the same voltage as the manual?

The manual TPS is basically a switch, it's either on or off. The auto TPS gives a linear voltage output, basically it's a variable resister.

However the TPS used on the auto Starlet can be found on many other Toyota models, give me some time this morning and I'll did you out a list of potential donor cars.

Before replacing the TPS a quick check of the E2 ground and VCC 5v feed wiring to the TPS will confirm your not wasting money.

Pull off the connector at the TPS, it will have 4 pins. Set your meter to 20v DC, switch the ignition on and connect one probe to the bottom pin and the other to the top pin (it doesn't matter which probe goes where). You should see a voltage reading of 5v or near as damn it (the meter may read -5v if the probes are reversed).

If the reading is less than 4v we may have a wiring/connection issue somewhere in either the E2 or VCC circuit.

The VCC feed should be the top pin of the connector, you can confirm this by using your meter again set to 20v DC. Connect the red probe to the top pin of the connector and the black probe to the earth bolt on the inlet manifold (next to the idle air control valve at the opposite end to the throttle body). You should again see 4v or more. If you get a reading of 0v then we're testing the wrong pin, so connect the red probe to the bottom pin and check the voltage reading again. If you initially see a low voltage reading then clean up the surface of the earth bolt and test again.

Next we need to check the E2 ground feed to the TPS. The E2 pin will be the one that gave a reading of 0v from the above test. Set your meter to 200Ω and connect one probe to the E2 pin of the TPS connector and the other probe to the earth bolt on the inlet manifold. You should see a resistance reading of 0.3Ω or less (the 0.3Ω allows for any resistance in the contact surfaces of the meter probes and the points you are testing). If you initially see a high resistance reading then clean up the surface of the earth bolt and test again.

A VCC voltage reading of less than 4v or a E2 resistance to ground reading of more than 0.3Ω at the TPS connector indicates a wiring or connection fault. Such a fault will cause an incorrect TPS output voltage so it needs to be rectified before unnecessarily replacing the TPS. If the above readings are as expected then we can assume the TPS is at fault.

The TPS is located on the side of the throttle body, the opposite side to where the throttle cable is attached. It should look like this:

The adjustment is mainly for the idle position switch when the throttle is closed. I'm doubtful you'll be able to 'adjust out' the voltage drop your seeing at the VTA terminal of the ECU, but the procedure can be found here:

The guide shows a manual 3 pin TPS, however it's the same procedure for the 4 pin auto TPS and the same bottom 2 pins are used. You'll need to carry out this adjustment if and when your TPS is replaced.

The engine will start with the TPS disconnected, however the idle air control valve will not function until the IDL pin of the TPS connector is shorted to ground (the idle switch in the TPS does this).

Also is the manual TPS would give the same reading as the AUTO one?

No. The manual 3 pin TPS has a ground connection and switches the idle contacts to ground when the throttle is closed and the power contacts to ground when the throttle is near wide open. The auto 4 pin TPS has a ground and 5v VCC connection, again it switches the idle contact to ground when the throttle is closed, but instead of a power switch it changes electrical resistance as the throttle valve opens. This change in resistance provides a linear voltage output between 0v-5v based on throttle position.

The manual and auto TPS are not interchangeable, for a start the throttle bodies are different and so they won't physically fit. Also their input and output configuration and functionality are different, it's maybe possible to make a auto TPS work with a manual ECU but wiring a 3 pin manual TPS to an auto ECU would possibly cause permanent damage to the ECU.

Well, started doing it today, real bastard to get to. Taken the strut brace off. But still can't put the probes on it, they're too long, didn't get much time so will have to do it on the weekend.

Anyway, put everything back on, and yahoo, the car was absolutely awesome, power came back to my starlet..... only for 5 minutes though -) So really have this feeling that I'm digging in the right direction.

Another thing I've noticed that the engine gets very hot, even the inlet mani is mega hot, I can't hold my hand on it longer than 2 sec, I'm sure it wasn't like that before and I only run 0.6 bar at the moment.... Any thought? What would be the symptoms of sticky thermostat? it was replaced 10 months ago, but either way it doesn't feel right.

Ok done that!

Pull off the connector at the TPS, it will have 4 pins. Set your meter to 20v DC, switch the ignition on and connect one probe to the bottom pin and the other to the top pin (it doesn't matter which probe goes where). You should see a voltage reading of 5v or near as damn it (the meter may read -5v if the probes are reversed).

I saw 0V only

The VCC feed should be the top pin of the connector, you can confirm this by using your meter again set to 20v DC. Connect the red probe to the top pin of the connector and the black probe to the earth bolt on the inlet manifold (next to the idle air control valve at the opposite end to the throttle body). You should again see 4v or more. If you get a reading of 0v then we're testing the wrong pin, so connect the red probe to the bottom pin and check the voltage reading again. If you initially see a low voltage reading then clean up the surface of the earth bolt and test again.

Tried all 4 pins and they all have 0.11-0.12 V. (Cleaned surface).

Next we need to check the E2 ground feed to the TPS. The E2 pin will be the one that gave a reading of 0v from the above test. Set your meter to 200Ω and connect one probe to the E2 pin of the TPS connector and the other probe to the earth bolt on the inlet manifold. You should see a resistance reading of 0.3Ω or less (the 0.3Ω allows for any resistance in the contact surfaces of the meter probes and the points you are testing). If you initially see a high resistance reading then clean up the surface of the earth bolt and test again.

When I set it and 200 Ohm, I had 1 on the display, I've checked all 4 pins and on all 4 I had 1 - so literally no resistance.

P.S. Didn't realise that putting the multimeter next to the dizzy cap will make it go tits up -) I thought those leads [brand new] supposed to have good EMI suppression -)

@ Paul_JJ: i've been zapped a few times just sniffing around the HTLs. also didn't touch them -- just came near them. my dumb & dumber moment was that the engine was running and i'd properly earthed myself on the TMIC with my left hand as i was groping around with my right.. ZAP! now i know..

It shouldn't zap you Starcraft, if it does then you need to replace the leads! I can touch anything I want and won't get any static or shock.

Something isn't right there! You should have 1 pin showing the VCC voltage of around 4v-5v and the ground wire should have less than 1Ω resistance to the earth bolt on the inlet manifold. These 2 feeds are crucial for the TPS to work correctly.

Measure the voltage between the VCC +5v and E2 terminals of the ECU with the ignition ON, you should have 5v.

Also measure the resistance between the E2 terminal of the ECU and a good body ground with the ignition ON, there should be no resistance.
