Following on from the "What Laptop" thread, what is the best anti virus software around?

I wont be going for Norton or SpySweeper again as thats what I have on my lap top at the moment and now its fucked after my mate looked up loads of porn!!!

It wont even run Windows now!!

Just ordered a new Dell laptop for £600, so I want to protect it with the best :)

Take windows off straight away and install Ubuntu (Linux) then you dont have to bother with any security software that just slows you new laptop to a hault! Here is the link if your interested...I have been running this for 6 months now and I will never go back to Windows again!

AVG is good and its free too. I did find it slowed my computer down a bit though. Although to be fair my desk top is chocker full so that won't help!

As suggested if you want to change your operating system from Windows then I would go for UBUNTU also. You say your buying a Dell, they are currently offering UBUNTU with their laptops so I would go with that, and as they are offering it then you wont have any hassle with drivers and updates:p

If your staying with Windows then I would highly recomended Avast Home 4 Edition as your security centre, its completely free all you have to do is register on their site which is www.avast.com .
And for spyware I would recomend SuperAntiSpyware, again this is free and can be found on www.superantispyware.com
Use these on my laptop and recomend them to all my customers.

AVG free edition 8 and use spybot s&D you'll be sorted with those as long as you have a router with a hardware firewall.

make sure the daily scan is disabled. it's unneccesary and slows the comp down.

AVG is good, but i would recommend the following over it:

Kaspersky
NOD32
Bitdefender.

AVG is probably the best free virus scanner you can get, coupled with Spybot Search and Destroy, with Zone Alarm as a firewall.

Agreed with NOD32...Its all I use these days. Very easy on System Resources and very user friendly. Best yet it's got the highest virus pick up rate there is. The new version has a firewall built in aswell...which I couldn't comment on as I haven't tried that version.

AVG is fine. I have it on my laptop which doubles as a TV and is never switched off. I run different flavours of linux/unix for testing etc but to be honest even the most user firendly are a nightmare for non-technical users when something goes wrong. As for mac's... I wouldnt have a present of one - anything apple is evil

i used to think the exact same thing aswell, untill my friend bought a decent all in one thing and it is actually amazing to use. So simple, nothing crashes, no viruses, no slow down it just works. love it. id get one now if i could afford one.

Uhm...

Change an OS on a home laptop, why would he want the incompatibility issues related with anything other than windows, the sheer volume of hassle you'll go through getting *anything* to work - both software and hardware...

I'm a Linux user too btw, I run a dual boot setup for work and university studies. I'm not a great Windows fan, but I'd never replace Windows with Linux. Just thought I'd highlight this to SCOOBY-MODDERS incase he sseriously takes those siggestions on board.

I'd get Avast! antivirus if you want a free windows based AV, otherwise get NOD32 if you're willing to splash out a bit. Nod32 is an incredible bit of kit.

Also, if you take on board what people are saying about security on Mac's and Linux boxes, you should consider this:

86% of internet usage is Windows based,
6% is MAC based
8% is everything else... (All the linux distro's - unbuntu, opensuse etc, freeBSD, and all flavors of UNIX)

Why would anyone bother taking the time and effort to find a security hole in a mac or a distro of linux lol?

With the same (probably a little more) time/effort you can break into 86% of online computers? If you're smart enough to find security loopholes, you're smart enough to know that.

I remeber reading a great article about security on Macs, in which they had someone familar with security flaws attempt to gain remote access to a mac, and then be granted root access (control of everything on the system). Not only was it acheivable but they managed it in a very short time (~10 minutes).

I can only imagine this gives a general idea of security on the less well known platforms.

In short... Stick with Windows if its for home use and get Avast! :p
