had the gearbox off last night, my first time, and Ive been a doughnut, this was still attached, am I right in saying its the speedo cable? I forgot to disconnect it, and by the time ide noticed it had pulled out, It doesnt appear broken in any way as the end of it is squared, so Ive just pulled it loose.

excuse the bad lighting in the picture

also I noticed the gearbox shaft that goes into the clutch has a bit of play in it, I can rattle it up and down ever so slightly, is this normal or a problem?

yes, thats the speedo cable mate, as for the spigot shaft, its on a bearing, so shouldnt be much play in it, hardly any.

Lol! I like that!

Yes that should have been screwed off, as to whether you damaged it by pulling it off i dont know

your speedo cable may have broke off from behind dash cluster.. the cable itself can pull out but not the whole lot without clip on back of cluster.. as for the shaft mate thats what is making the noise we were talking bout through pm...

I was afraid ude say that. Is there a chance I could get this fixed while the gearbox is off? or would it cost arm and a leg?

as for the speedo cable, case of cluster out to see the damage, and then maybe re attach from there? if this is done incorrectly can I fuck up the speedo, as in make it read incorrectly?

its an area im unsure of mate but that bearing is on the inside so the box will have to be taken apart but would be much less than a gearbox rebuild.. if the outer cable holder for the speedo has broke off from clip behind cluster just glue it back on making sure that the speedo cable itself is mating with the cluster.. once gearbox is back on turn the speedo cable and you will feel it slot in to the cluster.. and when connecting it to the gearbox turn it again till the key on the end of speedo cable (gearbox side) slots into the speedo converter in the box.. can be fiddly tho.. took me a few attempts to get it 2 mate with dash cluster and gearbox together..
