on an imported car 12" by 6" is the american import car plate size, but can also be used on japanese imports. i believe the normal jap plate size is 13" by 7"
either can be used legally as long as the number and letter size and spacing is also correct.
if its not an import all you can legally fit is one of those massive halfords square plates that chavs put on their saxos or a normal long plate.

we used to get away with this:

Basically I have a proper Japanese size at the moment relocated to the side, as I fitted the front mount. I didn't cut the bumper so I can still keep the plates where they were originally but that would restrict the air flow.
Dan so having a small number plate will be legal on our imported starlets?

no i got i £30 fine for each plate, for having a picture, only gb or the euro sign are ok to have

For the purposes of measurement, each character (again, excepting the number 1 or the letter I), regardless of its shape, is treated as a rectangular block of dimensions 79mm x 50mm
Optionally, number plates may display one of the following national emblems: British Union Flag with “GB”, English Flag (St George Cross) with “ENG”, Scottish Flag (St Andrew Cross) with “SCO”, Welsh Flag (green dragon on green/white field) with “Wales” and “Cymru” or Euro Flag (circle of stars) with “GB”. If the Euro/GB configuration is displayed, then the bearer vehicle need not display a separate “GB” emblem when driving within the EU.

It looks very close to road legal! What was the size of the actual plate???

The size and other factors depends upon the year of the car and on the private plate or not. Many of the factors has to be considered in this sequence of providing a number plate for a car or for any other vehicle. The technique known as blurring is used for checking the uniqueness. I had taken the number plates for my car from one of these companies. Please produce some more attachments for the more detailed view.
