It's a charcoal canister, it's purpose is to retain the vapour from the fuel tank prior to it being purged into the inlet manifold.

Removing it won't cause any damage, though it does serve a valid purpose. If you do remove it make sure you do not block off the fuel tank vent hose.

Dont block the hose off that returns to the fuel tank (from that cannister) completely, if you do there is a vacuum (of sorts) created in the tank as fuel is used out of it. It needs to be sealed to stop dirt getting into the tank, if you dont put a small breather on it, a piece of rag cable tied over the end will do the same job.
