considering the 2k budget here is a quick list

Nissan Almera 2.2 Di
Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD
Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDi
Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9 TD
VW Bora/Passat TDi
Mazda 323 2.0 TD

i would most likely go for the saab.

I do like the Ibiza's but could only find them with high high miles around my price range, still need to shift the golf first! lol :)

where a land rover is concerned (trust me on this) you can do litteraly everything urself, they are very fun to work with, and (strangely enough) its very rare that something goes wrong with one.

Best advise would be - look what taxi driver's drive -) These cars would have best mpg possible, believe me or not - that is the main reason for them to buy a car!

Personally for me if I wanted to go Cheap Petrol I would go LPG on a decent petrol car - Toyota Celica 1.8L for Example 2000 model - looks great, deliver up to 45 mpg with 6 speed gearbox and assuming you have LPG would be fast and cheap to run! Great handling with ESP, cheap insurance as well!

Only thing with that Paul is, either the car is expensive or just too big. There's a bloke here using a Prius hybrid - he's well set for at least 50 years!

another good option is a ford focus diesel. 1.8, insurance is cheap and they have a good reputation for reliability and easy to get parts.

you can get a 02 plate for around £2000 which is pretty good.115bhp model is the one you want.

You get shot of the golf then Rich? If so fair play, and any cars in mind?

Nah not yet, not really pushing to sell it so much at the min as it's an awesome car! I feel it's like a proper drivers car if that makes sence! I'm not 100% yet thought my mates really tempting me to get his Glanza but he want's 3.5k for a standard glanza in that Darkish blue colour which needs a new windscreen and topmounts on the front so not entirely sure it would be worth it, if not then a diesel all the way :D

Taxi driver would never spend a lot on the car - they buy it for a year or so, as cheap as possible, normally high mileage ones! Prius - great car for London.

Yeah, my manager used to have a Diesel BMW 2.0L - 320 I think, W reg and he said it did 750 miles per tank!!!! Sold it for j2200 with 130K on the clock, but mint condition otherwise!

Do not buy a starlet for 3.5K unless it's TD04 and minted -)))) Starlets = bad economy!

Yeah that's true, my mate bought it a year ago or so for 3.5k only mods it has is an exhaust, alloys, dump valve and tein adjustables since then I've seen starlets go for a lot less :) hmph maybe I'll msg him in a few weeks when he realises it won't sell for 3.5k!

Depends what sort of 'taxi driver' you're on about. You have hackney and private hire.

Hackney has much stern regulations to meet, whereas private hire, not as stern. But then you're talking Big volvos, avensis (not a bad car, diesel range), passat, galaxy, mercs, and the list goes on.

Regarding your mates starlet, seems a bit pricey for a stock model. Get something with mild mods, will save you bucks. If I was looking for economy, I would personally get a TDi range.

Yeah know what you mean buddy does seem pricey! well tbh I only really use the car for work which is usually at one place about 5miles away so car barely gets to warm up, then about once or twice a month I drive to Gatwick, Heathrow and Brighton I just figure at the minute im spending around £65ish a week and a half / 230miles! which seem's a lot to me!!
