Questions

When one wheel is raised and the other in the floor should it spin freely?

When both wheels are raised when one is rotated should the other go same direction or different ?

I ask because I bought a
Trd mechanical diff
From a USkc member

Had it fitted and went for mapping. From reading reviews the car should lock and pull with both wheels
However it didn't I nearly ended up in the hard shoulder.

I contacted my gearbox specialist and he says this is not right the diff is either faulty or not as described.

If I am wrong I will apologise for the mistake, if not I want the issue sorting.

It's cost me a hell o a lot of money and time to build my car and don't take kindly to being messed about

Although if I am wrong I will stand correct and sorry awaits

That is all

It should try to lock as your rotating the wheel.. It should be quite a struggle to rotate it by hand

Get both front wheels off the ground, select first and spin them by hand.

Always believed that if they both spun in the same direction it was a LSD gearbox. This is true for a Cusco 1.5, Quaiffe and standard Toyota diffs in my own experience. Non LSD equipped boxes will spin the wheels in opposite directions.

Hi mate its me you bought it from, If you were to drive the car hard i guarantee you would feel the lsd working, i don't no if the mechanical and clutch types have different characteristics but if you show everyone the pics you have of the lsd Im sure it can be identified as the trd mechanical lsd! If it turns out some how its not what i said it was then i have no problem giving you your money back!

Cheers

Pics on way, we ran over 1.2 on a gt30 mate, and since I've been down all types of roads at .6 and it spanks one wheel up and heads to one side

jack the car up on one side, if you can spin the wheel freely, she's no LSD, thats the whole point in them to stop one wheel loosing traction without throwing the power to the other wheel. I dont think it matters if its in gear or now when jacked up, i think mine still locks in neutral when trying to spin the wheel by hand

it does look like a TRD unit to be fair

It appears to be a TRD mechanical (clutch type) LSD. From what your describing, it sounds like the clutch plates are worn out allowing one wheel to spin without locking onto the other.

I'm guessing you didn't strip the diff to check the condition of the plates before having it installed? Mechanical LSD's are not maintenance free like a helical LSD, they do wear out and will at some point require new friction plates.

To be honest was told it was in good condition

Thank you texx that seams to explain the situation. Any advance on worn plates?

I'm not sure where you could get a rebuild kit from. IIRC Fensport are a TRD dealer, so might be worth contacting them to see if they can get hold of a rebuild kit for LSD part number 41301-AW004.
