Air intake solutions

I have ppl giving me different info.
Bought the car with std air box then swapped it for k&n cone filter because of better air flow etc. My mechanic is saying to put the std one back in because of the outside temps (mid30s') and engineer bay temps, I'd be losing power sucking in hot air.
He suggested modding the std air box. Using 2.5in flex hose a cutting a hole on the front r/h side of air inlet then down through the hole just behind the headlight then drill same size hole underneath the front bumper in the plastic to increase cold air.
I thought I could take it 1 step further and drill a hole in the side of the lower left side of the air box and run flex pipe somewhere also but this would look that appealing.

I should ad I do have a/c and don't plan on removing I it as I'd like to drive the car in the hotter months aswell. So filter relocation to behind bumper is unfortunately not an option

He's right Bud, don't be drilling holes in it either.
If you really can't reloate it because of no room id suggest a performance panel filter like k&n or TRD :)

do you have a FMIC and/or is there room behind your front bumper or grill?
i'm not keen on drilling/cutting certain things,,,but if you can drill a hole in the airbox, keeping the oem/k&n/TRD filter in place, and run the flexi hose to some point behind the front bumper/grill that you can get fresh airflow,,,then that may give you what you are looking for

the hole in the airbox would need to be before/pre-filter----if it's post/after the filter, then unfiltered air/debris could get to the turbo and potentially cause damage

additionally, if you do run the flexi hose,,,be careful and place it as high as possible from the ground, Australia gets flooding sometimes, and the last thing you want to do is suck up excessive water with that hose

I have the stock top mount intercooler atm but as I said I have AC so no real access direct to the front, only the wheel well from behind the head lights ( there is a round plastic removable cover 2.5in which gives you access to the wheel well, actually just in front of it so its under the bumper but just infront of the wheel. I'll get some pic on it later this avo.

Performance panel filter and job done IMO.

If you can direct more air to the air intake behind the passenger side headlamp it should help matters but it depends on how much room you have. Have also seen a few gains with heat shielding around the intake tract too but it can be difficult to make it look neat.

Does anyone have the part number for the k&n panel filter. I heard ppl have ordered what they thought was the right one bit it not fit.

There was a thread from a while back on the forum stating there is a way of fitting the cone filter behind the bumper with ac ising 2 90 bends and drilling a hole in some plastic. There was also pic attached but I could not view them as it was a post from early 2000s I think.
