Anyone with knowledge on diesel avensis'?

I'm looking at getting an Avensis 2ltr diesel shortly

Maybe from 2000 - 2003 range..

Is there anything in particular (other than the standard inspections) that I should be checking for or are there any known issues with the engines etc?

Also, around what miles does the timing belt need to be done and roughly how much would that cost?

If anyone can share their knowledge on this, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers

the common problems with the d4d engines are turbo failure, air flow meters and the cat breaking up/blocking all causing very poor performance

I'm fully aware of it I'm a Toyota tec  and the flywheel alone cost around £500
headlight can get condensation u may be able to get them chaged if the car is under 100000 miles from toyota

so you are thinking of making the move from corolla to the big dirty diesel :) I had the new avensis as you know and it was a great car. Farmers seem to like the old shape and drive them until there is nothing left of them. As we discussed if you are going test driving I will go with you.

Lads what should someone look out for when test driving one of these.

I know the diesels sling out a fair amount of black smoke anyway but will I smell oil in it if the turbo is fooked? Will it be throwing out excessive amounts of smoke if the turbo is knackered?

What model of turbo is on these cars and are second hand blowers easily got?

What mileage does the timing belt have to be changed at and how much should that cost from a garage?

Are second hand cats easy to pick up and how much might they cost?

Are the gearboxes strong?

Any known issues with electrics?

Thanks! and rep awarded for answers ;)
