Bike test =]

Does anybody know exactly what various tests you have to do before you can ride whatever bike you want?

Like, the levels etc.

Looking to take my test this year, and got the savings and heart set on this....

Depends on age, iirc!

If you're over 21 and you pass your bike test you can ride anything after you pass, if you're younger than 21 I think you can only go up to 400/600cc!

Best off googling mate. :)

I am in northern ireland and did my bike test last year. First theres your theory once thats passed you can do your practical test. Once you pass you are restricted to a 33hp bike for 2 years. This could be an R1 as long as you got a restricter in it.

I was reading up on this and would like some clarity on it, but from what I've read. If you are already 21, you can take your full bike test and once passed, you can ride any size bike without restrictions. Is this correct or do you still have to wait 2 years after to derestrict?

hi mate, i passed my bike licence when i was 17, due to my age i could techinically get any bike i wanted, but as stated above, it had to be limited to 33bhp, i had to do this for two years, but this meant when i was 19 i could then ride any bike i please, rather than waiting till im 21 to do a direct acces course and test which lets you then ride any bike.
Courses when i did mine were around £500 then test fee's on top not sure if they are still the same or if it is the same for direct access. Bst thing to do is have alook in yellow pages etc for bike learner places near you and they will be able to give you all the info you will need.

Cheers, Ryan.

I think what I've gathered, is that when I'm 21 in November, I'll be able to take one test and ride round on my MV Agusta F4 1000! :)

Well imo your mad to buy a 1000cc motorbike if you have little expierence on them, no offence intended but you probably will hurt yourself badly that is a seriously fast machine your looking to buy there and with the little expierence you have, id be buying a far less powerful bike. build my expierence up for a couple of years and then get something like that. just my 2p. also your insurance will be huge.

Sigma mate work up to that they aren't the fastest bike on the planet and its a great aim but start with a smaller bike to learn your control on as I'd hate to drop that!(and you will) I passed my test 6+years ago.

A light motorcycle licence (category A1) will give you full licence entitlement to ride machines up to 125 cc with a power output of up to 11 kW.
A standard motorcycle licence (category A) will restrict you for a period of two years to riding machines with a power output not exceeding 25 kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16 kW/kg. After the two year period you may ride any motorcycle.
If you are aged 21 or over you can take the test on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp). If successful you can then ride any motorcycle

you can also take the restricted test over 21years old and be restricted on power output for 2years.

I started out with a 1998 gsxr600SRAD a fantastic bike to learn on due to its light weight and low torque in low rpm(designed like a racer) means easier to ride for novices. Then I had a zzr1100 (148bhp unrestricted at the backwheel!) sold that last year and now ride a gsxr 750SRAD injection brilliant machines for handling. I find the bike I have now slow now(lack of low end torque)even though its supposed to be 125bhp.

nice machine mate but no one wants to hear about you being killed. I would start small and work your way up. You mentioned you have driven bikes on an airfield ... there is a world of difference between riding on an airfield and real world just be careful man you often dont get second chances on bikes.

thats as good a bike can get , thats like a gp bike compared to the other bikes, but as said by the others mate take advice from who have experiance i would start first with a 250cc - 400cc then after a year or two con go to this after gaining the needed expiriance to be on the crazy roads with a fast bike like that. Good choise of bike you have got taste :p

I started on a Honda VFR400R, awesome power for only a 400cc and sounds nuts! 0-100kph in 4 seconds or so.

Fairly heavy bike though being a v4 and I did drop it shortly after getting it :homer:

Good advise, I have looked into my bike test, but still lodging at home means I can't take it!

Being over 21, I could ride anything, although I have already planned to buy a 400/600 bike, then after a year or so move up over to the big power bikes, gixers etc. Insurance is also expensive, 21 with 0 years riding experience on a R1, they will just laugh at you down the phone.

I'd love to do my bike test, but my mum and mrs will not let me as they know id probably die.

My cousin had a gsxr 1000 and christ that shifted, id ridden a couple of 400's before but it was something else. In a way scared me abit but have to admit it was fun thinking back.

Id definatly consider jumping on a 400/600 for a few years get use to it all.

i have an RGV250 in pieces in the garage i did the engine up but did not fit ot on the bike its too fast and im too crazy to drive it i would die from it one day as it could keep up with anything on the road so my gfrind dont want me to fix it and get it out
