So my car is giving me some grief.

for the 1st time in 1 and a half years , she has PMS.

Today ,we had a storm hit cape town and as luck should have it, caught us on the roads. Water was approx 10cm deep and i did drive slow ( since i removed my intake pipe and driving with a OPEN ct9, i didn't want to take any chances.

The whole day the road has been very wet and puddly, hit a few every now and then with some huge sprays but the starlet kept on floating.
s
This afternoon , i noticed that when i boost at about .5 - 8bar the car just misfires or so it feels.

it has now begun to misfire under load when pulling away, but when i have it idle it seems to get better.

Also seems to misfire when i blip the throttle. I know that if water did get into the turbo it could damage the wheel, but what are the chances? Also an unbalanced turbo would literally self destruct?

I changed my Irridium plugs about 2000km ago with normal Ngk's ... Could this be it? I haven't checked anything will do in the morning.

any ideas welcome.

Idd bet that it is just your ignition leads that have got wet.

It happens to me sometimes if I wash my car and forget to block the bonnet vent up.

Drive it around off boost in the dry and see if it improves, you could also spray some WD40 in the connections of the leads.

:)

how annoying, so i ended up spraying the cords with Wd40 to get any moisture out and it worked for about 2 weeks. I figured with the amount of misfiring it has to be a plug breaking down, afterall i did change the plugs to regular cheap ngk's

This morning I put my Denso Vk20's back, ran fine for abit, but as soon as i get onto about 5-7 psi boost it just misfires. Sometimes if im in a high gear and loading the engine it will misfire too.

That tells me .. 2 things , either the plugs or the leads... I dont know where i can get leads for the car, as there are probably 20 starlets in south africa.

Besides the leads, is there anything else i could check out?

iv been told by brian ilaria toyot power house specialist never spray wd40 on your car ignition leads because it will just it and lie around the plugs causing build up of carbon and eventually cause a even worse miss fire what i would recomend to do i remove the plugs and blow them out using a air compressor apply silicon grase around the boot connectors on the dizzy cap and if at a worse case scenario try standard plugs for the pure reason that our engines were designed by toyota to run with the standard plugs not iridium . i have used both in my car and feel that theres no difference but brian tells me other wise and with 30 years + of toyota tunning exp i will take his advice on board

Try gapping your aftermarket plugs.

Parts are not hard to order from Japan and you are closer to there than we are!

chnage plugs and leads because a missfire can lead to carbon deposits on ur plugs and leads and will continue so its best to change both if u just change leads then the deposits will go straight back onto ur plugs so its best to chnage booth the reason i have infomation on this issue is because i had the same problem and resolved my problems following brians instructions

Can you explain to me how leads will transfer carbon onto the plugs?

Change the plugs first if it continues to misfire consider changing the leads the carbon will burn off when you are running properly.

spare leads might be a problem.

are there any other toyota's that use the same leads?

They are not a problem, they weigh feck all and wouldnt cost very much to post to Cape Town at all.

Im sure one of our site traders would happily post you some.

you do have a point, but what are the chances of timing actually being retarded at the same boost? I even thought of detonation, but at .5bar i really doubt it.

The car runs brilliantly upto .4-5bar slightly over and it just looses the power

The leads will break down when they are under more strain i.e. more boost if they are at fault.

If it is missing when you generate more than 0.5bar I would firstly do a diagnostic test, change the plugs, check the distribitor cap condition and clean contacts, clean the rotor arm contact. The problem you are describing could also be a knock sensor problem, is you engine management light coming on when you loose power?

No, strangely not.

I also suspect its the leads, the previous plugs i had in was only in the car for 3000km and they broke down like crazy, especially with more load on the engine and alt (driving at night) I put the old plugs back, since i knew they were perfect and the only reason i changed them is that i didnt know how long they were in the car. The car ran good for while this morning, but soon started breaking down power when getting on boost or low Rpm in a high gear.

Ill see what i can find at the dealers with regards to plug leads, I should have a part number somewhere, but if anybody can assist sooner, please do.

this is the lead number i have

4E-FTE spark plug leads - 19051-EP801

Check if your aftermarket stores sell NGK wires for a 92-94 Toyota Paseo. The Paseo uses only 4 leads and if you need a new coil wire you can get one from a 96 Toyota Camry.
