Not done route 66 but done Vegas. few tips would be to do a skydive, was so awesome over there, gamble on the machines at the bars and you get free drinks and make sure you go downtown (the strip isn't techinically in Vegas) coz they are a lot friendlier, the stakes are better and the drinks are cheaper. Get this:

4 Corona's in Treasure Island (on the strip) = $28
4 Corons's in a casino downtown = $4

Route 66 doesnt exist any more. You have to take loads of different roads and all the nice motels and stuff have been closed down. Parts of the journey are long, boring and with nothing there!
Get a drive away car and do it for free if you can.
Oh and had a convertable mustang (the new ones) In the states you can get a 4l v6 one. Its the slowest, worst handling car i have ever driven, and i have had an austin allegro! It struggled up hills and had a top whack of less than 100, i tried to get more but it was a no no!

I have done I10 from Phoenix through Tucson across New Mexico and Texas... man the scenary is unreal! You can continue on I10 and it will take you right across the southern states and into florida.

Next on my list however is San Diego right up the west coast which is supposed to be amazing.

When I was over in Vegas I drove down to the grand canyon and got a bit lost ended up on route 66... I know its an iconic route but it looked no different to any of the other roads.

I would highly recommend a long drive across the states though.. its cool

Just trying to decide which route to take. Will be starting in vegas as we are going to see the wifes family and thats where they stay. I really fancy doing it on a big bike but the wife is not so keen.

I think the bike thing might get a bit much after a couple of days. You can rent a convertible quite cheaply sot hat would be another option although when I was in vegas we couldnt even take the top down because it was too hot.

A cool route to do would be from vegas down passed the hoover dam, the grand canyon, down through arizona, through new mexico across texas and arkansas and into memphis. Fly back from there. That would a cool trip.

We are going for a month so I plan for a pretty epic journey. I want to start in vegas and make it to new york. My original plan was vegas to chicago then north to new york.
