Gearbox crunching

I have just sold a gearbox which was working perfectly, the one who bought it has just fitted it and told me that the third gear is crunching. What could be the problem because I am 100% sure that before I have removed it, it was not crunching at any gear?

Could he have done something wrong, may clutch or maybe he needs to adjust the clutch?

Hi guys i'm new on here, sorry to jump in on someone elses thread but i think it's relevant. since i bought my glanza v its always had a crunch into 2nd. I know that the guys who sold it had a friend who fitted a recon box so i had always assumed he fitted it badly. maybe mine has a similar problem. If it was the synchro, wouldn't it happen in more than one gear? Also how do I check the gearbox fluid levels. My car's quite low so havent had a great look underneath yet. This will obviously be my first port of call.
appreciate any advice.

@ Jaydog82: crunching can also be down to a worn or bad clutch. check that your clutch is on point. is your 2nd gear the only one crunching atm..?

synchro death

now that we are talking about this, based on your individual experiences, it seems that 3rd is the first gear to kill its synchros..? how come..? why not 1st or 2nd which imo would be more abused/used..?

syncro rings use friction material to slow down one part so it can 'mesh' with another. once that wears it cant do its job. having seen a few starlet syncros and had 3rd gear fail on mine it seems some syncros in there look different to others(use different friction material). i assume thats why some fail more than others

seems to be borne out by the fact that it happens at high engine speed gear changes when stuff is moving at very different speeds.

in answer to jossgarev , is it possible you didnt rev the nuts off the car so syncro problem only showed up when the new owner did?

symptoms

you mentioned yours failed Ted, what were the symptoms as this was happening, pre-crunching that is..? was there difficulty in engaging 3rd..? did it used to kinda 'notch' into place or it was just normal then one day it failed..?

got worse and worse, rev up to red line in 2nd and you would have to wait half a second to get it into 3rd without crunching. not much difficulty engaging, just a nasty crunch
