No unfortunately nobody has one. I have bump started it no problem as its parked on a slight hill, given it a good run about 1pm today. When I parked it up I turned off, started it again and it worked. Tried again at 5pm and same old click click click! Thanks for your help

bump or jump started? some people call them different things. did you connect jump leads or did you push the car along and then lift the clutch up in gear to get it going?

if its the second one, i would say your starter motor is the issue. next time it plays up, get a metal bar from above onto the starter and give it a few taps with a hammer (not too hard) see if that makes any difference.

Yeah I bump started it, rolled it 2nd and lifted the clutch. Whereabouts is the starter motor located in the engine bay?

Round the back underneath the inlet manifold.
It's easier to see from underneath tbh, but once you know where it is, you can see it from the top, just ;-)

Sounds more like a stuck starter to me. Try what dac69er said and give it a few good taps. If it fires up right away then you know you need a new starter. Anything else to do with the charging system probably would have given some slow cranks of the engine before going completely dead.

Just had a look but couldn't see it. I looked near the inlet manifold but couldn't see it, saw the alternator. Is it near that? Doesn't help when its pissing it down and blowing a gale! Does anyone have a dummy's picture of where its located?

Sorry I'm shit, I know!

its at your right hand side behind the engine. below the intake mani. it should be a round big black thing. look at the right side(gearbox side) below the hose/tube that runs from the waterpump to the thermostat housing. Could be a bit dificult to see from top. From under the car it would be right in your face

Is this the thing, just above the engine block to the right of the alternator?

good pic :)

what happens is you should turn the key and the solenoid (the smaller part attached to the starter) pulls in allowing the main connection on the alternator to make as well as moving the drive gears into mesh with the ring gear on the flywheel and it will turn the engine.
if all you hear is clicking its either there isn't enough power to turn the alternator once the solenoid has clicked in, or there is a bad connection somewhere. could just be the brushes are worn out inside the alternator or it needs a good clean. when the car was working ok, was it sluggish to turn over at all?
if you can prove its the alternator, easiest bet is to swap it out for a working one and keep the other as a spare to get rebuilt if needed at a later date.

Its not my pic, I think the starter would be the least of my worries if it was!!

Yeah it was sluggish to turn over in the last month but would always fire first time. Does this mean it is the alternator instead?

Just tried to start it again and now its not even making the clicking noise. That seems like the battery has been drained somehow?

you need a voltmeter mate. even if you buy a cheap ebay one for a fiver. will give you an idea of what is going on.

do the rest of the electrics work?
