how does the no claims system work?

does anyone know for definite how the black art of no claims works?
i currently have my starlet turbo insured with 5 years protected no claims, and my uk starlet has 5 years no claims via another car or something like that????

anyway, what is the crack with no claims? i am under the impression that you can only use the no claims on 1 vehicle at a time? surely if you havnt claimed for 5 years then its 5 years no claims? when i come to try and insure the mx5 im not sure whether to put 5 years no claims or 0? if i put 0 the premiums are pretty high as in the insurers eyes i have next to no experience due to the lack of no claims!
are all insurers different? do some let you use it and some not?

can someone clarify this please?

yes you can only have your no claims on one vehicle at a time. But some insurers will mirror your discount. I've heard of sky doing this. Also try some insurance breakers.

Have you insured 2 cars simultaneously in the past? with separate insurance cover? you can build 2 no claims up for each car. I have a car with 11 years no claims and a motorbike with 5 years no claims. Unfortunately the insurance companies milk us wherever they can.

this is the 1st time ive had 2 cars insured at once. had a bike insured and had 3 years no claims but most insurance companies werent interested in it, so that is lost. bloody stupid system i think.

call a few insurance companies and ask them about dual car policies sometimes they're cheaper. Sky insurance said they could help and so did chris knott when we were asking. Most companies don't have a clue but chris knott seems very good and willing to help.
