idle a bit crazy

sometimes my ep is going on a bit of a bender. when its cold its reving up to 1800 or 1900 rpm! when i was driving home last night the idle went to 1900 and the car was warm. today nothing its quite normal! i noticed it is sitting a small bit higher in de revs than normal and i have to come to a complete stop for a few seconds for it to idle normal. it never used to do this any1 any explainations??

clean the idle control valve, located on left hand side of inlet mani as u look at it from front of ur car.
and coolant sensor as mentioned above, also ur idle screw may have been jammed, so look at that as well.
