Hi, I'm currently making plans to go away for about a year and as much as it KILLS me I have to leave the car garaged :(

What sort of precautions should I take to make sure the car is in working order when I get back?

Hand brake off for a start, battery disconnected, in neutral? I guess these are just basics.....

Can you not get someone to start it every now and again ?

Put steel wool in the throttle body and exhaust.

Put it up on jackstands

Put a light layer of paint on the brakes. It will burn off when you drive it again

Is it going to be locked up in a secure garage or will someone be starting it for you a few times and maybe might have to move it?

give it an oil change before you put it away and make sure its clean and dry.

to be honest, if its in the uk and ireland its going to get a bit damp unfortunately so just try and make sure its aired as much as possible. stick one of those £1 de-humidifier things in the car to keep any possible mould away.

everyone does things differently. if its only a year, its not so bad. i would be tempted not to touch it at all during the winter months, but get someone to give it a few good runs out in the summer if you can. failing that, just getting it out of the garage and sarting her up and making sure it gets warmed through. in the winter this can do more harm than good due to the water produced from the exhaust.

make sure the fuel tank is about half full at least.

Most important is the garage. Keeps the brakes good . Leave handbrake off and if possible grease up rear calipers handbrake mechanism. Petrol is gonna go off in a year. Tyres don't like sitting in one position so axle stands. Battery out. Window open to stop mould ruining seats and trim if garage is damp.

Should be able to get someone to start her every now and then but can I trust them not to rake the dung outta my wee car when I'm away is the question lol!

So leaving the handbrake off seems logical but as I don't know if I'll be able to put it on axle stands it would be worth putting chocks behind the wheels as well.

What about the gearbox? Do i leave it in gear / neutral and would it be worth giving the box fresh oil as well as the engine before I go?

gearbox isnt so bad as its the hydrocarbons and other crap from combustion that gets into the engine oil that can cause problems. admittedly a year isnt that long, but worth an oil change to be sure anyway.

gearbox just leave it in gear.

i never put my car on axle stands and it sits for 6 months of the year.
