Introduction

Welcome to January's edition of our very own TGTT Newsletter. You should find a varied snapshot of the past months happenings and highlights in the following sections.

I'm at the helm this month as Dylan is off exploring America. I'm sure we can forgive the lucky sod, he deserves a break after all. Anyhow, on with this months recap.

At points throughout the month you may be asked to contribute to the newsletter by one of our staff members as this is all about you and your community. Please submit any ideas and feedback to toyotagtturbo@gmail.com

The Monthly Interview

INTERVIEWER: Jay
INTERVIEWEE: Trevor

- Thanks for taking the time to speak to us Trevor, I know you are a busy man. Tell me, when did you first start importing Starlet Turbos?

I imported my first GT in 1991.

The car was a 6 month-old Gunmetal Grey automatic with 6000 kilometres on the clock. I had sent off a few letters to car dealers in Japan and eventually one replied to me and was willing to send me a GT. I sent off the money and worried constantly until the car arrived and it was as new. I loved it and everywhere I went people would stop me and ask what it was and where they could get one. That's how the whole thing started.

I'd always been into Starlets ever since my next door neighbour bought a lime green KP when they came out. I was still at school at the time that was 1978!

- That's a long time ago, how did you first hear of them?

I first found out about Starlet turbos off a guy in Newry who had been given an EP71 by a business customer of his in Japan. He had no interest and no-one wanted to buy it. I bought it for peanuts and had a hell of a time getting it insured and registered. It was not in great shape as it had sat around and my original letters to the dealers in japan was to get a newer EP71 but the dealer who replied to me sent me a brochure on the EP81 which was just out in Japan and I had to have that instead of the EP71.

- I take it that you developed your business from there, how has the market changed since those early years?

For a long time I plodded on getting really good Starlets for people who had asked me to get them one and then I moved onto buying as many as I could afford. My wife and I often went without so I could buy more Starlets. Back then really good cars were easily sourced.

Nowadays really good cars are hard to come by and has resulted in a lot of damaged-repaired and clocked cars appearing on the for sale ads everywhere. I have seen damaged-repaired cars in Japan that I turned down appearing in the autotrader and e-bay as being mint with a lot less miles on them.

I get angry at that mainly because most Starlet buyers are young lads and they are blinded by the fact that they just want one. I have had lads arrive here with them on trailers not fit to be driven a few days after they have bought them. I my best to get them sorted after such trouble.

I am quite proud of the fact that all my Starlets are top notch cars and are as good as can be bought anywhere. I sell them totally original as they arrive and only give them a clean. I don't and won't drop my standards like some have done.

- We've seen quite a few poor examples for sale outside (and sometimes inside) the enthusiast websites. Has the quality of vehicles dropped in recent times?

The quality has dropped big time. I get lads arriving here with cars they have bought wanting them serviced and repaired and I find it hard not to tell them they have bought a dog I just try and get their cars sorted for them. The prices they have paid for them are sometimes scary. My conscience wouldn't allow me to sell dogs like I have had come here for repairs. Sometimes you get Starlets here and they should not be on the road. I have even saw GT's with no GT brakes fitted on them!

- That's quite alarming Trevor, what advice would you give anyone wanting to buy a good quality GT or Glanza?

I'd tell anyone wanting a good honest car to look to the long term traders who have an excellent reputation.

A lot of guys seem reluctant to travel for a good car but personally I would travel to hell and back for the right one. I've seen me travelling over 1000 miles on a round trip to get the right car. Planes and ferries are so cheap these days and most dealers will take the distance and cost in travelling into account when negociating a deal.

- Finally, rumour has it you have turned your attentions to Mazdas as of late. Has the Starlet bug left you or are there future plans for a 'TRS' Starlet project?

I must admit I like the wee Mazda's. They are very underated. Most young lads think they all belong to hairdressers or should do. Let me tell you I have never driven a better handling car in standard form. Add some boost and they really come alive and believe me - 325 bhp in a MX5 is verging on being frightening. I never thought i'd say that about any car. My maths isn't good but by my rekoning that works out at well over 350 bhp/tonne.

I do enjoy the Mazdas but Starlets will always be No1 with me. We have a few high powered Starlets coming from Japan real soon and I can't wait to pick one and turn it into my personal weapon of choice. Roll on the summer and my very first track day where we will take the wee 325bhp Mazda and my pick of the tuned Starlets out for some well deserved fun.

I have been extremely busy this last while and it's going to get worse as we now have around 25 starlets and Glanzas coming. I tell Richard (my business partner) not to buy any more and he tells me the same. Next thing you know another cracker has been spotted and we both decide that we can't miss it. I just hope my neighbours can hold out. I do service their cars for them and do their oddjobs so hopefully they won't complain too much.

I work full time like most people but as soon as I get home it's out into the garage until bedtime and thats 7 days a week. Anyone wanting a good straight honest Starlet GT or Glanza V there is only one place to look over here and one or two on the UK mainland.

Most of all i'd advise everyone to take car and think before they act both in buying and driving. There are so many young people being killed on the roads its unreal and I feel for the families and loved ones they leave behind. I don't feel too much for them themselves as they will never get to know what grief they left behind.

Thanks for you time and patience Trevor, I'm thankful to carry these words of wisdom to the TGTT faithful. I wish you all the best in the future and I'll see you at Kirkistown this summer.

Welcome Section

Hello Ladies and Gents,

It's been a busy month in the Welcome Section with people joining from a large variety of locations from around the globe, with many different plans for their vehicles. At the time of writing this, there has been 253 new members to site in the month of January which can only be a good sign for the future growth and content!

A project that caught my eye belongs to Steffrees. He is currently in the process of transplanting a 4EFTE from a Glanza V in to his crash repaired, 1 Litre Toyota Yaris! His initial post with a few pictures can be found HERE. Hopefully he will become a Paid Member at some point so he can give us all regular updates on his interesting project ;).

That's all for this month, hopefully have many more interesting new members next time!

Craig.

Events

Past

Well I think its safe to say the Christmas has quietened down the meet scene. Over the past month there has been a few gatherings to report on. Not only do most of us find funds a bit more tight around the festive period but also the weather hasn’t been on everyones side!

For any of the members near Edinburgh ‘Smiles’ was kind enough to upload some pics of the meet which was held on the 4th Jan 08 the pictures can be found here -

http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/showthread.php?t=8117

In the North West tgtt.com had been invited to attend an organised meet with members of the SX Owners Club and the Lancer Register Owners Club. The meet was held at a welcoming pub in Chorley where most members went inside to taste the food and came back outside to have a look around the lovely motors that were on show. The meet went smoothly and fuss free so much so that the owners of the pub welcomed the meet back anytime. Pictures of the event can be found here

http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/showthread.php?t=7984

On the 27th Jan Idree’s organised a West Yorkishire Meet for all the starlet owners. With many members attending and the weather holding out the pictures make some good viewing. You can find the pictures here -

Upcoming Events

For a reference anyone wishing to know the dates of future shows in order to save and maybe book the time off work please take a look at the calender or this thread on the upcoming events -

http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/showthread.php?t=8925

The promise of tracktime at Japfest was on offer earlier in the month. With a deadline for payments needed, the 2nd Feb was set! It meant that we could give the people who was willing to pay up a chance to get on board and replace the members that dropped out/didn't pay. The form was sent off only for us to receive an email saying that all the dedicated track time was taken.

The clubstand will still be at Japfest in full force. And i'm trying my best to get the members who are still interested in random track time with any cars on the track.

I will be offering refunds via bank transfer to all members who paid up for the starlet track time but simply want their money back (unfortunately this may be minus 4% fee paypal has already charged) - The thread can be found here
http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/showthread.php?t=10065

For anyone who would like a taste of silverstone track there is the Japanese Tuning Show which is being held on the 1st June. Tracktime will be available for anyone interested there is a thread here for you to view over -

Its nice to say all meets mentioned above had no reported problems and everyone had a good/safe time.

Tech Talk

I'd like to use the opportunity each month to cover a few key points :

1. Maintenance
2. Repair
3. Modification

This way we can hopefully offer a little something for everyone.

Maintenance

Right, just a reminder of the general servicing requirements of the 4EFTE for everyone this month.

Every week : check lights, levels and tyre pressures/condition.

Every 5,000 km renew the oil. Further info
Every 5,000 km remove, clean and inspect the air filter, renew if required.
Every 10,000 km replace the oil filter - Further info
Every 10,000 km check the sparkplugs and renew if required.

Every 12 months check alignment and camber. Adjust geometry as required.
Every 12 months replace fuel filter. Further info
Every 12 months renew coolant. Further info

Every 24 months renew brake fluid.

Every 6 years/100,000 km (whichever occurs first) replace timing belt & ancillary belts - Further info

These guidelines can be adapted to each person's personal needs and preferences. High-powered applications will require more attention for example.

Repair

Rory highlighted a very good issue that most owners don't realise. The sills of the EP82 can clog up with water, debris and roadsalt resulting in expensive repairs further down the line.

Prevention in this case is much better than cure so please ensure you cars are well protected and check your sill areas at the earliest opportunity.

See original thread here

I've seen a lot of evidence of extensive sill rust on previous EP82 breakers. The EP91 seems to have some sort of padding inside the sills. I'm not 100% sure if this combats the issue effectively but I'll update you all as I find out.

Modification

The TD04 turbo update is a worthwhile, fairly sensible and well trodden route to more power. I was glad to see a well thought out and genuinely honest account posted by EP82 (Alex) of his firsthand TD04 experience.

As he states, a lot of backup modification and expense is required to run this setup properly. It is not a simple 'bolt-on' affair as often depicted in daily forum life. I can certainly appreciate the work he has put into the car and wish him all the best in getting it up and running.

Project Of The Month

DSCF0078.jpg

As if being Engaged to the gorgeous Kelly Wasn't good enough Ben (ben_j) has got himself one sweet starlet too ( Envious anyone ) . Being modified with track days in mind this starlet has been built with balance and performance in mind none of this Pub talk Big BHP boasting figures in this equation. Simply put this starlet is Phenomenal. Packing enough handling mods as it does power mods it's as nimble as a ballerina on stage at Sidney opera house as well as as powerful as a Sumo Wrestler on his way to the all you can eat buffet.

Don't get me wrong when it comes to power it's not shy packing a fantastic Blitz k24 turbo kit under the bonnet and running 1.1 bar of boost it pumps out 225 Bhp and 209lbs of Torque giving just enough pickup out of the corner. Modifications to the engine to get the best out of this turbo have been taken care of with a Lightened and Balanced And Blueprinted Engine, a Ported and Polished gas flowed head, a Lightened and balanced flywheel and High lift cams. A strengthened bottom end, Forged pistons and rods make sure the Boosts don't melt the block into a pile of molten metal. A Speedvision Over-sized head gasket keeps the compression low and Magnecor leads and grade 8 iridium plugs keep the spark going. cooling has also been taken care of too with a Blitz front mounted intercooler, a Greddy oil cooler, a Blitz radiator cap, a Corolla Radiator, a Jam racing cooling plate and a Sard low temp thermostat. Fueling is kept in the best range by Sard 550cc injectors, a Sard adjustable fuel pressure regulator and a Walbro Supra fuel pump. Spent exhaust gasses take route through a Jam Racing Manifold and continue through a Blue Flame de-cat and out the back end via a Blue Flame stainless exhaust system.

All that power has to be controlled some how so to take care of that Ben's Starbo has been fitted with a Excedy ceramic twin plate clutch attached to Straight cut gearbox fitted with a Quickshift and Racing LSD all giving a read out to a Razo gear indicator. "Well" i hear you say " This ain't America we have things called Corners here ". don't fret fitted with D2 adjustable coilovers with adjustable pillow-ball top mounts, Heavy duty anti roll bars Uprated arms, joints and bushes all attached to a chassis strengthened by a Cusco front strut brace, a Cusco rear strut brace and a Full bolt on roll cage with carbon fibre crumple zones it's sure to handle as well as it goes and with EBC grooved and dimpled discs, EBC yellow stuff race pads, Braided stainless brake lines and Dot 4 fluid it'll stop too.

The interior isn't much to speak of well ah..... errr...... because there isn't much of it left. Stripped out to save weight the only add ons are Greddy boost controller to adjust the turbo boost and a Greddy boost gauge to monitor the boosts. and to make sure the engine is still there a Greddy oil pressure gauge, oil temp gauge, water temp gauge, AEM wideband AFR gauge give the vital stats, a Constant fan switch has been fitted for those heated track days and Trust/Greddy gear knob Razo pedals and a OMP deep dish steering wheel add a little bit of flash to the interior. Corbeau Targa recliners and Sabelt blue 4 point harnesses with Blitz harness pads make sure you stay seated during your 4 second journey to the shops for tea and biscuits.

Outside it's suttle and focused on what it's built for. Sporting only ( and i used this word Lightly ) a Jam racing fibre glass bonnet, a Jam racing reverse scoop held on by Bonnet pins a Relocated number plate so the Intercooler gets maximum air and the Front fog lights, Rear wiper and Rear spoiler have been removed. Sitting a-top incredibly light and strong Bronze Volk Te37's wrapped in R888 semi slicks it's surly one starlet not to be underestimated.
