Low temp thermostat- yay or nay?

What's the current consensus on low temp thermostats?

I'm not convinced by them. I have a genuine stat in at the moment (82°c) I also have a slightly lower temp one I could fit in (76°c), or I could go with the low temp ones that are sold (68°c).

The car only gets used in the summer in the UK. I don't do track driving, however, I might.
I will be running a forged engine aiming for 300bhp.

What are others opinions/experiences?

Mine never really went over a 3rd on the guage using the triple core rad and slim fan :)
2.5' decat into Straight through Nur Spec, a fake hks mushroom and running .8 Bar guessing 150ish hp area

i'm not clued on aftermarket thermostats....i've always used the stock one with no issues as i believe it helps to keep the engine within its operational specs.

on a side note, may be you can consider getting a honda civic 3 core aluminium radiator (1/2 size) or the larger (full size) aftermarket 2 core aluminium radiator...those may be better at keeping your engine cool for spirited drives and/or tracking...i can't comment on the latter aftermarket 2 core radiator, but some members in here have run them in the past, so maybe they can share their experiences

i prefer aluminium ...it seems to dissipate the heat well

i run a honda 3 core aluminium radiator in 30C+ Caribbean temps and it has worked great, even during spirited drives...for comparison, i've run oem ep82 single core (manual), oem ep91 dual core (from the automatic), and custom 2 core (full size) brass radiators.... and all of these were not up to the job if pushed for an extended period

The only time I'd consider one is if I were getting heat issues on track, even then it's only useful to keep the engine cooler outside of the 'hot' laps. Just because the coolant is initially circulating at a lower temp might not help solve the peak temps seen at racing pace.

In my experience I've seen Starlets struggle with heat so I've kept one or two on the shelf in case they come in handy. Doubt you'll need one on the road Duncan.
