My starlet almost burnt to the ground...Any ideas

Right the other night my rear lights and dashboard lights went out, found out it was a 20amp fuse so changed that as i got home, then last night on motorway a shit load of smoke came from the steering wheel so pulled over and could see flames coming from the wiring, i paniced and smashed the living shit out the plastic bit under the steering wheel and managed to put it out, now the indicator, rear lights, and dash lights do not work.
Any ideas how this could of happened?

When i brought the car with my gauges i have 3 down the pillar and one on the dash, when the ignition was turned the 3 down the pillar turned on and the one on the dash only turned on when the headlights were on, but since i replaced that fuse the other night one of the 3 of the pillar gauges only turns on when the headlights switch on..

Anyoneeee:confused:

Seems like all the gauges maybe wired into 1 single positive fead, I would be pulling those gauges out and seeing exactly where their all wired too, make sure wiring is good and the right thickness too, I'm no electrician but I know you can start a fire fairly easily If you try overloading something. Just remember that wire they have used was never meant for any gauges so it would be an idea to try and use a few different + feeds, lights is 1 I used for mine and another came from the radio 12v feed. Hope this gives you some idea bud

I have had two burning wire experiences. First the heat from the head light bulbs melted the wiring insulation and another a wire was phsyically damaged by the engine movement which shorted the wire but the thing was the wire set fire to some lining a long way from where it shorted. My point being you need to check along the full length of the wire that failed not just where it smokes.
