Alright guys posted up here a while back introducing myself currently own a 172 clio but due to stupid insurance quotes may be selling it, so im on the look for another car thats small and quick. Been looking at glanzas/starlets and infact im loving them, always been interested in retro jap crap so these are looking like the car i want at the moment.

My question is how reliable are these to run? as for the first year all i will be doing is exhaust, manifold, air filter relocation, few electronics to keep everything in order. After this probably suspension and brakes then finally engine work (bigger turbo,FMIC).

Also whats the cost of running them? petrol isnt to much of a problem as my clio now i get about 180miles to 25quid and 320miles from 45quid. Im more interested in parts/servicing wear and tear issuses.

Any help would be greatful or put me in the direction for more usefull info on the site

Cheers, Josh :)

good little cars bud ...lots of modding options..either running the standard ct9 turbo at a bar of boost with supporting mods will see ye knocking on the door of roughly 190 bhp, going hybrid ct9 at a bar will see this raise to roughly 200-210 bhp, then another widley used route is going td04(imprezza turbo)running a bar of boost on one of these yer looking at between 200-220 bhp..possibly a bit more...but they're a good little car ,and people are always breaking motors so if ye shop about and use yer nogging you can get it done quite cheap...it's all about the boost...lol!!;)

Reliability is good as long as it is looked after, so look for one with history or a known owner on a forum where you can see that the car has been well looked after, If you are looking at the cheep ones that come up now and again be prepared for some ££££ bills to get it as you might want.

I thought that the 172 handled exceptionally well for a hot hatch, so yo might be better off looking for starlet gt with suspension/brake mods.

If its looks you more interested in I personally think that the later shape can be dressed up to look stunning.

What ever you choice is, I'm sure that you'll find help from this site as well as a bit of fun -

Hiya,

Welcome to the forum.

I dont think any of the points you raised are of concern. They are cheap to run, and service etc. Just the main thing is make sure you do your research on the one your going to buy and get one thats had alot of TLC.

30Litre tank gets me around 230miles but many many more members get more than me (mine is an auto so more thirsty)

Cheers for your help, im mostly likeing the glanza atm the reason being they are newer.

Idealy i want it to be running around the 170-190mark for now then go down the tdo4 route once funds allow and iv learnt a bit more. My budget atm is around 3k can you pick up a decent one thats had a few mods for around that or will it be a right dog?

Yer the 172 has exceptional handling so wanting to sort out the suspension will be a must, just i want something where if i spend money modding i will get more than 4bhp added. As for the clio you got to spend £3k+ to see any increase in performance.

Whats the service schedule for these?

If you're having a problem with insurance, get the GT,

I'm lead to believe;
Glanza V Insurance group 17
GT Insurance group 14

Insurance isnt a problem as in the sense of prices, just i have 1k saved up and the insurances on my clio is 1,900 but they want to add an extra £600 if i pay the rest monthly, where as on a glanza v its 1k dead to be insured on.
