Rattling/ticking noise behind dash

Hi, a rattling/ticking noise has started behind my dash, seems to be coming from the drivers side. Sometimes its quiet and other times its incredibly loud and differs depending on speed at times.

Its driving me mental, any ideas before I start taking everything apart lol?

hazard relay?

it's not too much hustle to take your dash apart and diagnose. i'd proli figure the hazard/indicator relay came off its mount..? it's located towards the top of the steering shaft on a metal 'pole' to which it clips on. it's not held by a screw or bolt so it may be your culprit.
check it out and report back.. :)

dashboard cluster removal

it's easy as peas.. :)
remove the screws on the top side of the cluster surround (x2 pieces). with the ignition off, pull your wiper stalk to the bottom (fastest wiper speed) and your turn signal to indicate right. then pop the surround off using a flat screwdriver and slide it towards the wiper stalk side.

once off, you will see your dash cluster. remove the screws holding it in, x3 pieces (1 top and 2 bottom). then slide your fingers to the rear of the dashboard and feel for the speedo cable. it's a clip-on so you will need to feel around it and press the clip while pulling the whole dash cluster forward so that it pops off. then proceed to remove the three cable connections to the dash. they have clips too so you'll see/figure out how to remove them.

once the dash is out, you'll have more room to look around for stuff.

Great stuff! I took it for a spin just now and there was no noise after tidying the cables up a bit. However Its going for a longer run tomorrow so that'll prove if it's worked or not. If not I'll do as you've posted and see what happens! Judging by the instructions I assume you need small hands for the speedo connector lol

speedo cable

@hardcoreep: that sounds viable as well. speedo cable could be worn so it's skipping the notched teeth/tooth that should be keeping it rotating evenly.. :)
good one.

noise from the rear

I've got some noise coming from the rear - no idea where it's coming from! Anyone?

we should have renamed this thread 'noises' :) lol
i've got a similar noise from the rear (left) - sounds like a rubbery rattle. initially, it was my exhaust rubbing on one of the heat shields. i fixed that but the noise was still present. so i can presume it's my rear dampers. they are on their way out so i'm guessing it's the top mounts. possible..?

Paul_JJ, what's the noise like..? rubbery..? metal-on-metal clanging..? please describe it, with a possible location from where it's coming from..

It's like a plastic rubbing and not just in 1 place.... coming from behind my sit - the best I can explain.

My exhaust doesn't cause me any hassle apart from the noise -)

under the carpet?

@Paul_JJ: this one has baffled me, especially given where it's coming from. my take is, if it's not from under the car (you've checked that all is secure down there?) then it's likely to be something under your carpet..? perhaps worth a check, to remove the seat (if it's in), rip the carpet out and take a look..?

i found that after my battery relocation to the trunk, the +12v heavy gauge wire would at times start to make a thudding noise as it hit the body & it would completely leave me baffled since everything under the car was intact.. :)
