Repairing badly scuffed alloys

O.k guys i need a little advice about how to (d.i.y style lol) repair my badly scuffed rims which i got for free so might as well have a whack at it.

I have seen a few ways this can be done.

1. use filler and putty and then paint

2. Weld the big gaps some are approx 4-5mm deep on the face as these stick out somewhat and use putty on the smaller ones and then paint.

3. An alternative to welding is to use liquid steel which is really good from what i've seen and will work similar to putty but be steel like and of course pain them.

I am leaning towards 3 because it will give the best repair with the least effort.

any advice welcome. I will be doing this at my brothers garage so i'd have every thing available air tools, big compressor and all other stuff garages have lol

thanks

bassically the more time and effort you put in the better the result mate :p

I see what you say about the filler and sanding it but would it not be better to use the liquid metal stuff which would be a similar process to the filler and sanding except that the deep scratches will be filled with a better material then filler.

I am considering starting this in the next few days so all input is welcome.

I get mines from the local hardware store, Its also known as chemical metal and JB weld. It's very useful.

I think i am gonna go with JB weld it does the same job as filler but better and wont be affected from vibrations etc. Now i need to find JB weld in a bigger tube lol.

sadly i will never find a place like that in london lol thes ekidn of places dont exist here. Gotta go a little out of where i live to do that. I have a shotblasting gun but no beads lol.
I didnt shotbalst the last set which turned out fine after about 1 hr of sanding lol but i'm not looking at time saving here so its okay.

Shotblasting will probably get rid of half the scratches bro! But I suppose you could do the same with sandpaper.

Yeh I get you but I'll just use sand paper on them first and see how it goes and see whats needed to be filled in.

dont whatever you do shot blast them, the shot will start to seperate the pores in the metal. You can sand blast them but best bet is to acid dip them

i have used liquid metal with great results, just do a light skim with filler just to smooth it off.

Thanks 59Bhp (do you own a micra lol) yeh i just wanted to know if i can use the liquid metal really without and problems and i was thinking of using filler to smooth it out too.

Which filler should i go for? can't use the normal body filler/putty can i?

thanks

Try a local paint shop, they should have a book with loads of colours - You could choose a bronze from there and get the code for it
