selling a car. does it have to be insured?

My girlfriend has bought a new car so her trusty ep91 will be up for sale shortly.
It will have tax, mot and insurance until the end of the month. After that it will only have tax and mot. Where do we stand with leaving it in the layby for sale outside our house with no insurance? I was under the impression you only needed tax to leave a car on the road?

Anyone know for sure?

there is a stupid new law that started this year saying that if the car has no insurance then you have to SORN it. you cant put a uninsured car on the road

you can get a £100 fine if you dont.

what a load of complete crap. so i have to insure the car for £200, just to sell it for £400, as no one will buy a car without test driving it!?!?

who thought that was a good idea?

Yep, if it's not insured you'll need to SORN the car.

The only legal way to test drive the car on the road once it's SORN is with a set of trade plates and a traders insurance policy that covers the driver.

My mate had a DC5 Integra that he was selling. It was on his drive with no insurance as he had swapped the insurance to another car.

Meant he couldnt claim for theft when a Range Rover full of guys came and robbed him for the keys after arranging a viewing.

Something to bear in mind.

If its not insured you cant make a claim, that goes without saying. I cant see him getting hijacked for a £500 Soleil lol.

i dont live in the hood. i left the keys in the front door and went out for the day once and nothing got nicked ;)

if someone was going to view the car then its a bit hard for them to test drive it without the battey or leads connected :)
