Should I be worried?.... bottom end going?

Due to me being lazy and busy I only just got round to doing a few little checks yesterday;

Oil looks ok and will be due a change soon anyway and compression is healthy at 180 across the board (pretty much all exactly the same).

The oil temp is still sitting higher but it doesn't get higher quicker than it used to, it just creeps up over long runs. The grumbly noise is still there, occasionally - but so is the hole in the exhaust, that will be getting sorted this weekend so I'll see if that makes a difference.

I've also get a new radiator on the way to see if that helps with the temps - although the water temp seems as it always has been. Overall its running fine though so it maybe is just my paranoia......

just before i went forged my old engine started grumbling, almost like a slight scraping, you could hear it clearly but not rythmic knocking. compression test was ok but the engine breathed a wee bit. turned out to be a cracked piston when we finally pulled it apart last week

There does seem to be a little more oil out of the breather now, thanks for getting me worried again!:p

I'll keep my eye on that though.

Possibly, I can hear it knocking on idle now anyway, its running ok for now but not sure for how much longer. So looks like I'll be on my 3rd engine soon or at least a rebuilt one.

Cheers but I've got my old engine sat in the garage waiting, don't think I'll bother going forged, I'm not looking for huge power - a bit more than I already have and some reliability would be nice though!

Cool mate, yeah i know you.
All about your handling, responsiveness and fine detail and tuning lol :p
Maybe a new rebuild with OEM parts then :)

Lol! That sounds exactly right!:homer:

It will probably just be a full oem rebuild yeah, may take a while though.

If I was you Id drain the oil out, take off the sump and check the bearings one by one or even replace them if you can afford it while its off.

It aint gonna check itself!

Gutted for you!
Not a nice thing to here at all.

Seems like the horror is on its way back :(

OEM rebuild will be fine for what you want with the car, its not like you run hoooge power, but as you say reliability is what you want.
Regular services etc help wonders.

Good luck

Yeah pretty pish, kinda used to it now though. I'll just have to get a run about then take my time rebuilding the engine, as I said I'll be happy with a bit more power from a hybrid but no point going forged. Cheers mate, I'll hopefully still knock my way upto the meet if I can!

Mind if I ask what happened to the prior two engines?

Its only this engine and one before it, the one before I think may just have blown the head gasket, at the time I thought it was worse and I got the current engine pretty cheap so it was just as easy to put it in rather than sort the first engine. I reckon the gasket may have gone because of the shoddy garage I had the head replaced at (due to a cracked exhaust port), they didn't even bother changing the oil when they did it (leading to turbo failure) so may even have reused the old gasket - I never asked.

With this engine I think running low on oil when I had a really bad oil leak may have caused this problem, my own fault really but I had to use the car to get to work and it's a 45mile drive - in that time it lost a litre of oil so could well have started this problem.:(

The problem is, when you loose quite a bit of oil due to an oil leak, there isn't much left in the sump because it's not a big sump (contains 3L). Sorry to hear the engine is gone.
