Smoke....not sure??

When I'm driving my car it runs fine, ticks over just nicely, however when I have been for a drive (not booting it) and then stop and let it just idle I occasionally get quite a bit of smoke?? This will stop after a period of time though. I have a straight through system don't know if that would effect it at all? Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

Cheers

Hey bud, did you come to the conclusion with Dean that it smelt like oil?

I have seen the smoke too and it is quite thick at some points, and it does vary, sometimes its a lot then it dies down, then it stays for longer.... hope a little bit of info helps

More than probably turbo seals exhaust side. When the turbo is under a lot of load and the seals are weak the oil can drip from the turbo into the hot downpipe/exhaust, as you know the heat will burn off the oil causing a lot of smoke pending on the amount of oil.

If you can, next time the car smokes remove the downpipe and you should see oil over the blades or in the downpipe, new seals and off you go.

toby thanks mate. How much are we talking because its not thick smoke. And is it safe to drive the car, how will we definatly be able to tell if it is the seals, also the car has been left for almost 2 months... Thanks again. Gaz and shaun

P.s is it easy to do yourself.

Yeah it's quite common, any good turbo specialist will be able to make some for you. If needed we can begin to supply them but it will take a few weeks to organise.

Best Regards,

Ive got same problem, from what ive read it could be a simple PCV valve on the rocker cover is broken, im replacing that first before i go changing seals etc.

Mine smokes badly recently only on idle, sometimes blue smoke most the times its like clear.

Smells of burnt oil tho

If the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve was blocked then it would smoke badly and constantly. If it's sparadic off boost, after long stints then more than likely turbo seals but yes there are a few possibilies. I rarely see blocked PCV valves, only on 1 occassion but nworth checking as Nick pointed out none the less.

Mine has always been dodgey looking but theres alittle oil around it now and it had alot of movement, needs changing anyways and turbo kit being ordered soon anyways woo! when you bring your monster to some meets toby? :p

Yeah sounds like turbo seals.

As to someones question about how to check for sure, as toby said a good guess is to remove the downpipe and the housing/blades will be black with oil.

My turbo seals are knackered but i believe its on the intake side as i have bad burning on overrun and nots of oil out of the dump valve.
