doubt its the tappets bud, it will more lightly be the stepper motor. pop the bonnet and the sound should be coming from the inlet mani area

stepper motor?

top ends can tap a little anyway. more-so if the clearances are a bit out.

the 4e doesnt have tappets it has shims and buckets. you get new shims to change the valve clearances.

you sure its not the idle control valve or the injectors? they are pretty tappy.

Me dads duna bit of reserch and apparently the 4e are prone to the idle control valves failing, proberly this as it idles at 600rpm sometimes :s
Thanks for the info guys

no its not! its a solenoid valve.

my bad, i thought you were quistioning what he meant by "stepper motor", and as a very large percentage of ICV are stepper motors, they are also commonly know as that. although the may not be an actual stepper motor.

Partially clogged oil gallery in the head for one area of the cam = more wear and tear = excessive clearance of shims = tapping noise.

maybe so, but tapping matched with an idle of 600rpm, as the OP has stated, makes the ICV first choice in the investigation.

how did your rep get to -14 ??
