TEIN Super Street Coilovers - bump stop split

Just noticed why my Tein super street rear coilover has been leaking oil, the bump stop is split nearly in half from the bottom up on the passenger side.

Anyone had this happen?

May explain why it doesnt look too healthy.

I take it you just order a new one, and get it replaced on the coilover?

Also for maintaining coilovers, whats the best plan, cover then in grease or copper grease or something?

You can buy and replace the bumpstops seperately. As for maintaining them. Copper grease on the threads and keep them clean and that's about all you can do

It's a good idea to tale them off once a year stip them and re-grease also keep an eye on the top mounts if they are on pillow ball bearing mounts they need to be kep clean.

Yep my TEINs have had a tough life with me from new, just checking out the rears, and the areas around the top mount plate where the bolt goes into the car have corroded away exposing the bolt on each rear coilover. The metal had completely furred up and split out.

Just something to check if you have these coilovers.

For info TEIN can get replacement rear top plates for £80 for a pair, plus delivery from Japan etc.

i got mine a similar time to yours and mine are still perfect as i dont use it in the rain or bad weather ;)

i had some D2s before that and used them all weahters and they didnt fare too well. think its just a coilover thing as they arent really meant for the salty shit roads in the uk.

The bumpstop is split because your shock is leaking, not the other way around. Damper has failed, resulting in you hitting the bumpstops (probably quite hard)

They will need a rebuild, especially given the state of the other bits you've mentioned. Teins are rebuildable but I'm afraid I couldn't comment on pricing or availability locally.

Just an update to this old thread, eventually got round to sending my rear coilover in to get checked, note below:

We have now inspected the damper and found that some parts will
require replacement, for us to complete the overhaul.

Base price is GBP50.00 + vat each
Sub total GBP100.00 + vat

Parts requiring replacement include, piston shaft, valves, guides
and inner tubes.

Operational Parts total GBP85.50 + vat
Sub total (x2 dampers) GBP171.00 + vat

Other external parts required include top mount base, eye ring
bush, spring seat and thrust washer (both dampers)

External part total GBP79.40 + vat
Sub total (x 2) GBP158.80 + vat

Air freight for parts from Japan GBP50.00 + vat

Shipping back completed parts GBP20.00 + vat

Total to pay GBP499.80 + vat
Inc vat GBP599.76

Due to parts being required from Japan, lead time once payment is
confirmed, would be around 3 weeks.

Before considering whether or not to instruct Tein to proceed,
please also take into account the condition of your front damper.

This may help you make a decision either way.

We can still supply single dampers, if you would like to receive
a price for replacements, if you require more options.

Meanwhile, if you have any other questions, regarding this
service, please feel free to contact me.

Looks like I will prob have to buy a new set of coilovers, or go for standard suspension I think!!

looks like MeisterR will have a new customer.

Aye, fucks sake. Goodbye yearly bonus.

I'm tempted to throw in normal Glanza shock mounts (i dont have these tho), and some shock refills with tein springs? Worth it, or are coilovers eternally better?

buy the time you have the new topmounts, dampers and springs you probably wont be far off a set of meisters unless you buy second hand

Maybe worth waiting a while to see if a ok set of rear tein comes up for sale. Stock shocks will feel a bit boaty after running teins but some folk perfer this.
