What can happen if an engine stands for a longtime

I would change the oil and filter before starting it. Could be moisture in the oil and god knows what else.

Just to be on the safe side...drain whatever oil is in there...buy your cheapest oil..fill it up...start and let it idle...you can put diesel in it or ATF...either one...and let it run for a good hour....drain it...and but the same cheap oil in it will a little bit of diesel or atf and drive for like 200kms...then drain and fill with the oil of your choice and change at 1000 miles (~about 1600kms or so) then drain again...then put the oil of your choice again in it...and it should be perfect.... (at least thats what i did...and i didnt have a problem with it)

Good luck!!

diesel flushing?!

@Silent_night88: you specifically mentioned putting diesel in and using that to flush the engine..? did you mean diesel or using diesel oil spec to flush. here's a little extract from carbibles that mentions this:

Using Diesel oil for flushing
A question came up some time ago about using diesel-rated oils to flush out petrol engines. The idea was that because of the higher detergent levels in diesel engine oil, it might be a good cleaner / flusher for a non-diesel engine. Well most of the diesel oil specification oils can be used in old petrol engines for cleaning, but you want to use a low specification oil to ensure that you do not over clean your engine and lose compression for example. Generally speaking, an SAE 15W/40 diesel engine oil for about 500 miles might do the trick.

what's the direct benefit of flushing your engine with diesel..? if it's even safe in the first place..

well what i did on the head was i just poured diesel on the gunk and used a tooth brush to scrub it away never ran the engine with the diesel in it tho

Most people in the states pour a little diesel fuel in there...like not even half a cup...and as it swishes and swashes around...it supposed to help clean junk out...cause it has a little higher detergency than ATF. but you can pour 1/2 quart of ATF in with the oil and let it idle...yea it will smoke like a train...but it does help alot in cleaning...just try not to do it too much...you might fry out your gaskets and seals...

hope this helps out!

EDIT: I wish i could get like a cup of jet fuel JP-80 and put that in the fuel system...you want to talk about a clean fuel system? HAHA

@Silent_night88: lol at jet fuel.. :)
overall, i don't think an engine will need that much work if it was well kept previously..

It shouldnt need all that work, no...i just recommend it if there is a little gunk build up...cause the detergeants will help clean out the oil passages and gullies so there isnt a blockage and something goes wrong...you only have to do it maybe once maybe twice if your motor didnt look like mine HAHA
