    Upgrading brakes.

I can't talk about brakes here as I'm not a trader. I have got one thing I need to correct quickly..... I'm a bloke. That is all. :-)

starlet owners with big brake kits, 4 pot or bigger

Just a few points to clarify! :-) WMS is nothing to do with Wilwood, we just compete with them. The WMS Starlet kits are designed to take more abuse, not fade, and have better feel/control, but without a massive torque increase to the front (this would upset the front/rear bias). To do...

    Brake caliper bolt sizes

The main (big) ones that hold the caliper carrier to the strut? They are a funny extra-fine-pitch M12, M12x1.25 I think. (M12 is normally x1.75, fine being M12x1.5) Best bet is to get another Toyota one to make sure it's a high-grade, new is probably not going to brake the bank and far...

Brake fade - discs or pads?

If you're sticking with standard calipers the best way to use your money is faster pads, and standard (but new) discs. Black discs, drilled discs, plated discs, grooved discs - none of these increase the heat resistance / performance, the PAD does that. But I agree with Iain, on track a...

red stuff pads a good idea ....?

EBC Green - Fast road, not up to much. EBC Red - Very fast road/trackday. Great all rounder and fine from cold. EBC Yellow - Race, but some cars use them on the road. EBC Blue - Endurance racing. For some reason EBC Red and Yellow have ended up back to front in Starlet circles!?

    Brake upgrade?

Both valid points, some cars might specifiy dot 5.0 from new, so you'd need to check with the dealer/car mfr to be 100% sure it's ok to change to 5.1 or even 4.0 - and again the other way round (but older cars meant to take 4.0 can go straight to 5.1 obviously). Mixing them may be a bad idea...

    Brake upgrade?

Dot 3/4/5.1 are all glycol based, and are hygroscopic, absorbing water and needing to be replaced more often/kept dry. Dot 5.0 is silicon based, and is hydrophobic. But it has two downides, 1. the water it repels (say it rains when you top up the fluid!!!!) can collect in small "pools" within...

big brake/rota gt3 users!! and genreal brake question

Torque at the hub is fluid pressure x total effective piston area (ie the area gets doubled for a sliding caliper) x coef of friction in the pad/disc x effective radius (from the middle of the pad to the axis of hub rotation, this is the "lever"). AFIAK Tuning Developments are still doing WMS...

    Brake upgrade?

This is something I wrote for a BMW site's wiki, but it applies to all cars so I thought it might help to get an overview! :-) ------------------------------------------------------------- Basic checks: First off, ensure the callipers are in full working order (no sticking pistons, seals...

big brake/rota gt3 users!! and genreal brake question

It's really easy to check if the WMS kits fit in your wheels - just print out the profile PDF 1:1 scale, cut them out and try them in your wheel! Sticking it to card will help of course... 4P107 - Normal 275x22 size kit with best wheel clearance (printable clearance test profile: 275x22 kit...

    big brake set up

The normal convention is for bigger pistons on bigger engined cars, so a 57mm caliper piston 1.8 AT200 and a 51mm caliper piston 2.0 ST202 would be really odd both being Gen 6's. The fastest Gen 6 (ST205) has 4x 40mm pistons, giving an effective area the same as the 57mm single slider ones (+/-...
