If the timing belt has snapped no valves are going to open anyway...

eh!? course valves are going to be open. one cylinder may be on compression stroke while the other will be on exhaust, if the belt/chain has snapped the pistons gona smash into the exhaust because the cam has stopped!

just to confirm vvti s are chain driven and not belt driven .

just too add we had a celica 190 vvti with roughly the same problem teh engine had seized up on that , it was the oil pump that had broken up , therefore starving the engine of oil

ahh good call.. never thought of the water pump.. if worst comes to worst then im sure a 2nd hand engine shouldnt be all that expensive

so are they a bad design or something? renowned for using oil and seizing?

Common problem but dunno about design ect. They actually had a temp. repair for it..........A new dipstick, with a higher fill mark !!! lol. We do alot of consumption tests, make sure the oil is topped up,then check it 1000 miles later, toyota say using 1 liter per 1000 miles is ok, anything else is excessive, lol. They did have extended warrenty on short blocks if you had full service history dunno if they cover the 1.4's though. As i said above it was mainly the 1.8's that were shit. First sign of no oil is a rattly top end, then the vvti controller go's due to no oil, followed by the bottom end :(

Hm another ZZ engine bites the dust. One could debate Toyota's reliability (and credebility) since the ZZ engines. They are all prone to be thirsty for oil , and the 1ZZ on the MR-S / MR2 suffers from the precats..little particals get sucked back into the engine destroying everything. I dunno if the same applies to the 1.4ltr and " siezed " could be caused by so many reasons..

the 1.8 vvti is known to be a dodgy engine. I have not heard anything about the 1.4 though. Apparently the 1.8 suffers badly from oil sludge build up. Toyota were relacing engines if you had a full service history.

They absolutely drink oil... as mentioned in this thread 1 LTR per 1000KMs.

For those who say it is almost unheard of for a timing CHAIN to snap... that is incorrect. My brother had one let go in his Nissan Navara and it destroyed the top end. There are loads of cases of this happening with the YD22 navara engine but it was due to faulty tensioners as far as I recall..

I went to fetch his navara when it happened and when trying to turn it over he was getting what sounded like a dodgy starting motor noise. Like it wasnt turing strong enough to turn the engine over, kind of a clicking.

To see if the engine is sludged up you can take the rocker cover off and have a look around and see if there are heavy dark deposits.

Also worth noting that on the 1.8vvti engine the dip stick shows full for ages then suddenly empty.. You can be checking it every second day and its fine then check it and its totally empty.. I think the dipstick must be badly positioned to take an accurate reading or something.

Here in Holland they had mega problems with the 3ZZ, that's the 1.6ltr engine. Same as yours 1.8ltr, excessive oil usage, I know some of them from the Corolla Club and there were few using oil as much as petrol LOL ! It's all warranty though.. but still.. doesn't give much confident. Better stay with the older stuff for next couple years, just skip the ZZ's haha !

only covered under warranty if you have a full dealer service history. As a lot of us service our cars ourselves this will not be the case.
