After several years of faithful service, thermostats can be prone to sticking. Always recommended to renew these as a preventive approach.
Remember to renew the gasket at the same time.

Also thought I'd add a guide to replacement in too for handiness. Hope it helps!
Thermostats can fail after many years of service in that they either stick open or closed for intermittent periods. It's a sensible move to replace a thermostat as part of regular servicing to prevent heating/cooling issues.
Here's a quick guide to replacing the thermostat on the 4EFTE engine:
There are two 10mm bolts holding the thermostat cover on:
Undo these bolts and unplug the temp sensor connection to allow the cover to be removed:
Once this is removed the thermostat will fall out and you will be left with this opening into the cooling system. If you see any signs of contamination it's recommended to clean it out (rust or sludge).
Here's what should be lying on the floor next to you (I had binned the old thermostat and seal before taking this pic):
The new seal and thermostat, ready for action:
Attach the seal to the thermostat around the edge like so:
Then the thermostat is placed in the cap and fitted in this position. I've been told to fit it with the little opening on it at the top. Not 100% sure why but someone with be along in due course to keep us right:
Then simply fasten the two bolts up being careful not to nip the thermostat seal in the process and reattach the temp switch.
Please add your thoughts on this one guys - have I covered everything? have I missed something important? Is anything wrong or misleading?
