I get all of my shells acid dipped as it is the most gentle process, it can be costly though, i think the last one was something like £1400 + vat and then if you want it E coated which i suggest you do its about another £1000 + vat but it will be perfect and the E coat gets up the chassis legs etc. You will need to book about 2 months in advance for this, the place that i always use is surface processing in dudley.

Sand blasting can warp panels and it is near impossible to get all of the sand out of the car once this is done and the panels will rust alot faster unless they are primed nearly immediately, we got away with my shell for 3 days in a dry store after the acid dipping and there was no sign of rust starting.

blast

i can't speak for where you can get this done.. but i can say, i'd go for sand-blasting then go over it with a powerful air stream. needs lots of patience though and despite not getting all the sand out, a few pebbles here and there won't hurt.. especially after seeing the 1400+ bill for acid treatment.. :)

acid dipping isnt as harsh to the body shells, its very gentle but removes everything, but does cost more.

shot blasting will distort your body panels and is very harsh on the surfaces.

there is an alternative called soda blasting this has the benefits of being cheap like shot blasting, but being soft like the acid dipping.

harshness

i've been to a few sand blasting shops and i do believe you can regulate the pressure your body panels receive by how large an outlet (on the sand blaster) you use. less pressure will be gentler on your panels but may take you (or the guys) longer to get done.. :)

or alternatively go with sx_turbo's advice & soda blast.. :p

Sand blasting is just a quick way to remove paint and the sound deadening material. We do it here all the time generally just to remove the paint and any other exterior imperfections like old body filler. It's a good cleaner, but offers no real weight reduction unless used in the interior, but it gives you a great bare chassis to build on.

Acid dipping actually affects the structural integrity of the chassis by thinning the metal. Its a complex situation and is based on how thin you can go, or want to go. Most cars that do this use a roll cage to rebuild the structural strength. On a street car I'd advise to leave the chassis alone and have the attached panels, doors, trunk, and roof it can be removed, done. When extreme the metal is now egg shell fragile and serious impacts will result in F1 like metal carnage. Having people just leaning on an acid dipped car can be a problem. In my old SCCA autox days this was trick to cheat because they never weighed the cars up to a certain class. So people would take their street cars and have them acid dipped.

An old issue or 2 back in banzai has a 4 page spread on spl of dudley as mentioned above. Very informative. Basically saying the acid they use these days is specially prepared to only remove what it needs to etc... And not as harsh anymore.

Check it out.

choice & dime

@ venomconcepts: i'd imagine for you to warp the panels that badly, that sand gun musta been giving out quite some beans.. :D
i'm guessing with newer technology on offer, lots of other ways to go around this so it's just how much bruising your wallet can take & what your preference is.. :)
