Never had to change my belts in the 5 years I have the car so it must be doing something right :p

its like saying taking your thermostat out will stop the car overheating. the proper way of doing it is to replace with a new one though.

i agree it will stop it from squeaking, but its not really the best way to sort it. plus if i belt didnt last 10 years or 100,000 miles then it hasnt done that well :p

but it goes away when i re-tention it. if there was shit/grit on the pulleys then it would be doing it all the time ?

WD 40 drives away moisture and cleans so It aint a bad solution if he has tried re tensioning the belt and the same thing is happening then it's worth a shot

all im getting at is that you dont put a lubricant on a belt. whether it has a solvent cleaner in or not doesnt make a difference

if it keeps getting slack then your not doing it properly. are you tightening up the pinch bolt at the bottom of the alternator as well as the 12mm bolt above it???

the pinch bolts is directly under the pulley two 14mm sockets i used(i think) to undo it didnt realise it was there was trying for about half hour to fit the new belt and then i noticed these and it made the world of difference lol

So whats the correct procedure, as all im doing is putting a bar down on the alternator so the belt goes tight and tightening the bolt.

Do you put tention and then tighten the top bolt first ? then do the pinch bolt ?

Had another look tonight under the car. Apparently the pinch bolt goes through where the alternator pivots is that right ?

I dont have no bolt going through it so im assuming it must of come off 1 day.

that will be your problem mate. all thats holding your alternator from falling off is the top bolt. get a bolt in the bottom asap.

with botht eh bolts there you should be fine. get the tension and then nip up the top bolt. then do up the bottom pinch bolt. the alternator wont move and it will stay tight and wont squeak ;)
