Best Firewall / antivirus

Hi you night-riders and hard workers depending on when you read this:)

Long story short. I set to download a movie whilst I nipped down to grab a midnight snack, popped up to have a shock of virus trojans etc. Luckily I system restored it and used spybot search and destroy to kill whatever got into my pc.

Now it's been silly and long enough for me not to use antivirus / firewall. Which do I need and where can I find - PM if it makes more sense.

Rep is always given - I know there's a few pc geeks like lingz etc..

Avast - the best choice ever! Spend some cash and get a pro version, it has everything you need, incl. firewall.

Avg - is very basic - do not recommend it.

15+ years IT experience...

there is no best choice in AV...its basically user preference and how much clicking u want to do to set parameters

antivirus should be rated from experience, in my case i have used them all since symantec was very good back in the days..but as environment grew and new threats became available and symantec couldnt handle it...so i started testing them long story short i have found ESET to be very good and reliable and for the government entity i am suppporting i needed that.

Which to now go for, AVG or AVAST

All repped:)

Avast has a free version as well, but I would recommend to buy a pro version. I had AVG (not the free version) before I went to avast and it didn't pick up a few viruses which avast found easily.

But Somal is right as well, as within time certain antiviruses get better/worse, so you can't be 100% sure!

get zone alarm free firewall too bud although apparently the windows 7 is ment ot be pretty good these days but i doubt it...

the best anti virus ive used is an intel one back in the day nothing got through that =P, but currently use avg as i find it easier to use... although ppl seem to say its not as good as avast but ive never had any problems

I HATE microsoft but "Microsoft Security Essentials" is very good. I have been using it since its launch and download loads of music and movies and have never gotten a virus with it

stay away from antivirus shit its all a con it doesnt protect your computer anymore than a slap in the face

also do yous not think that if they went to the trouble of getting through the ins and outs of windows they could spend a few more mins getting by a shitty firewall

windows defender is all you need you can never prevent but you can scan and clean, its free on there website

i read a article that a antivirus that they didnt name they said when they looked at the program structure and found something shocking. when the program started and found something ie worm/trojan and couldnt get rid of it, it told the user it was gone so they taught the product was good

One of the best protections against any form of infection is......Common sense.

Oh, and not visiting any dodgy p0rn sites to as they are rife with backdoor programs.

I'd use AVG Free though to scan and double check for things as that is good.

Would your computer not able to run with both these downloaded then what ever the other doesnt pick up the other does

Doesnt work like that, as mentioned above can cause issues with the pc eg slowing the system down quite bad with 2 av's running. Basically wont run right.
IMO
1. Avast ( free )
2. Turn on windows firewall
3. Windows defender
4. spybot

All are free or have free versions & do windows update

Lifer
avoid norton and mcafee at all costs.

Avast! is by far the best, the free version coupled with the windows firewall is perfectly fine fore the average user.

Avast gets my vote and don't forget to run 'noscript' addon for mozilla firefox for net protection.

How do i do that as I also run Firefox :)

Easier said than done - pornhub is my homepage, well not quite but I recommend it if your PC is well protected:) PM me, I have the best stars in my bookmarks:freddy::haha:
