Big HP Starlets - Putting Down The Power

Hi guys,

It has become apparant that we will never be able to use 100% of the power through 1st and 2nd gear when running high HP through the fronts, so I have been looking in to what we can do to improve things.

Some of this info has been given to me by another member running massive HP and running VERY low QTR times. I hope they do not mind me sharing this information.

- Lower control arm brace - Tie's your control arms together and along with the top strut brace you get a box of strength which also helps with handling.

- Whiteline anti-lift kit.

- Maxing out the + castor on your suspension.

- Good solid engine mounts. Will sacrifice a bit of comfort but will help eliminate axle tramp.

- Good wheels and tires

- LSD

Then when on the QTR:

- Running low pressure through the front tyres.

- Set the rebound on the front shocks to maximum.

- Stiffen up the rear shocks and even raise them right up if your keen.

EDIT/ADDED

- Get weight over the front of the car

- Run skinny tyres at the back

- Reduce weight

And the thing which I believe is letting me down..

- Throttle control!

I hope the member does not mind be quoting them.

The thing that will make the biggest difference is throttle control. About half throttle through first and 3/4 through second seems to work for me giving a fair amount of wheelspin but still pulling hard. You just need to find whats right for you. Slipping the clutch a lot will also help you get off the line quicker but will wear the clutch quicker. Some guys also just launch in 2nd with big power.

Please feel free to add any imformation hints or tips!

"- Set the rebound on the front shocks to maximum."
Dont think there are many starlet specific shocks out there that have a rebound setting. Cause if your shock has one setting it is most likely damper only. And you dont want a stiff damper setting otherwise the shock may not rebound quick enough to stay in contact with the ground.

The wheelspin quote above is relative to how much power you have and what grip you get out of your tyres ... the more power you have and the more you have to let go. More grip, more you can put through it :)

Some other tips off the top of my head
Do whatever you can to getr more weight over the front wheels even raise the rear, which also helps keep the weight over the front wheels.
Skinnier tyres at the back.
Reduce as much weight as you can :)
Also dont forget your motor, its getting a hell of a beating and very little cooling.

Was searching for some info in this thread and thought I would bump it up for others who may not of seen it.

My question is on:

- Lower control arm brace - Tie's your control arms together and along with the top strut brace you get a box of strength which also helps with handling.

Any links to these?

I am not 100% on the thoery behind these and would like to look into them, as I might purchase one if it is worth while.

Thanks.

The Re-bound cant be set to maximum. That is what will give you wheel hop.
I think you meant set it to minimum, so it reacts slow.

Maximum would act like a pogo stick....

Apart from that, Practise makes perfect.

What ur saying is good gee, but really all u really need is to shift the weight to the front.. ie raise the rears... most ppl use stock rear shocks & put bump stops so they come solid.. as for front an lsd, lower arm bar is good, but not essential... the main & most important is a set of FULL SLICKS... by far the best available are Mikey Thompson... either in 13s or in 15s :) the rest is all irrelevant.

OK, cheers.

I'm not a mad drag fan or trying to break records, just thought it would be good for people who maybe be more seriously into it or interested.

I'll correct some of the stuff above, as I said these are comments etc from other forums, not myself.

Looks like I will be buying a lower arm bar then :)
