C160 gearbox problem

Hi everyone!
Last night a problem occured with my C160 gearbox. When downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear I felt like the shifter went way to the left then it usually do and 2nd gear didn't engage. I didn't hear anything wrong inside the gearbox but now none of the gears that engage down don't work, namely 2nd, 4th and 6th. R, 1st, 3rd and 5th all engage and work just fine. Can anyone tell me what could be the problem with it? I know the gearbox needs to be opened and be checked but nonetheless I would like to hear your input about the possible problem.
Thanks in advance.

Have you checked your gear cables yet?

One cable controls back and forth shifter range, the other controls left and right, if the first cable is not operating fully you might not be able to select the set along the bottom range.

If you remove the cables from the gearbox you can also manually move the selectors on the gearbox by hand and engage each gear. That would help confirm if it's internal or a cable issue.

I've seen a few cables break locally.

Thanks Jay I'm going to check it out as soon as possible.

I believe I might have lost the piece that holds this into place... Is this possibly the problem? 17081668119626079376083131893519.jpg

Yes, looks like you need a new selector cable. May as well replace both if you can find them as the other one will be in similar condition to the one that has let go.

Also don't see the C clip in that pic which would give the exact same symptoms.

(Just to be clear I'm looking at that loose bit of silver wire as a broken cable, apologies if I'm mistaken).

If it is just a C clip you need a lot of Toyota boxes use the same ones. If you get stuck just ask on here, someone will have spares.

But is the cable itself damaged? Getting another piece like this will not make it work again? The groove in the cable doesn't look damaged. received_399154756034824.jpeg

They look similar to the clips that hold the brake lines in.

If you're struggling to find the clips, then it might be worth trying one of the Hel replacements.
