cam cover breathers

Hi All,

I fitted a filter to my cam cover breather 6 months ago and have noticed that it has some oil in it. are you supposed to replace these frequently?. also used about 500ml of oil in the same period of time. how much oil does yours use? plugs are fine and the car runs sweet. no smoke at all from exhaust or cam cover breather when revved. Ringlands? I hope not. any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

you should clean it out every 4-6 weeks.
I normally clean mines with brake cleaner.

loosing 500ml of oil in 6 months is nothing to worry about

Its probably just a bit of oil vapour thats on your filter. For that reason some people decide to run a oil catch can. Theres a few different ways to run them and has been discussed a few times on the forums :)

500ml isnt anything to worry about

Would the PCV valve not functioning correctly cause oil to come out of the breather? Is there anything else that could cause it?

may well just be a worn engine, as engines get older in mileage depending on how they get used and serviced etc some can burn oil. what you have i wouldnt have cause for concern just yet.

there will always be oil in the breather filter if you have it fitted directly on the rocker cover (i wouldnt recomend ideally it should be plumbed into an oil catch can for cleanliness and so you can monitor how much oil is getting out) some of this is just natural oil vapour that occurs when the engine gets hot, liken it to steam from hot water,

Pictures or it did not happen :D :p Would like to see your filter setup!

Nothing special. Standard pcv valve setup and a breather straight on the cam cover.

The car is at my mum's at the moment so will get pics next time I go to check it's not been stolen!

I will replace the PCV valve and see how I go. I've done a few checks and at tick over there is air coming out of the breather and under the oil cap. When revved this stops. I think this is correct, can anyone confirm?
