Coil on Plug

COP setup (Coil on Plug) direct coil on ignition connector

Hi Guys

a few Questions

1. is this a better option than multiple coils? (my theory is that im trying to eliminate the "wearable" items like leads, rotor etc.?)
2. is this coil physically attached to the plug?, meaning that if a plug is busted, then u basically have to replace that specific plugs coil aswell?

thanks

its individual coil packs for each plug, so u dont essentially have a ht lead comin formt he dizzy, i do believe u need to put on a crank sensor though to be able to run them

yes, i was hoping to go the crank sensor route, this will then lead me to my next question ... how to install or setup a crank sensor on the 4EFTE?

thanks

i was speaking to dave burwash about it as i want to go for an uprated coild and stuff and he said it was quite simple to do, there must be some one that can do a guide for us

true. all the high powered starlets in australia run them if you look on their site. im sure theyd be able to assist better than the lads on here about them as they have experience with them. i havnt seen one high powered starlet on here thats caught my eye running coil packs. I have looked into this also. you need an ECU thats capable of doing this also.

found 2 usefull links, it seems to be Mega Squirt specific, but the general distrubutorless info is general i think:

came across this PDF aswell:

i think he means coil ON plug.... like sr20det's not like most of us aussies running individual coils..... and im still using a single msd and making big power..... 250hp (at the wheels) is still decent aims of 300 as it is not going with individual coils till i have to.... and that will only b to break 340hp i will need it then i think

yes you correct, this has no plug leads/wires, the actual coil of that specific spark plug sits directly at the top of the actual spark plug connector. Its like individual coils, but eliminating the "wires part"

Something like this:

heres another example, where the spark plug would actually connect to the bottom and you can see the induvidual coils sitting directly at the top of the plug connector:

I think (hope i am right in this) if you get the california emissions oil pump for a 5e engine they have a crankshaft sensor on them.

it should all bolt on and then you need a competent auto electrician and some standalone engine management and a competent tuner and hopefully it should all hook up

Local guy is in the process of converting to 2zz COP's, it's fairly straight forward with an aftermarket ecu. There is no inherant need to change to a crank trigger based timin control, the dual vr 24/1 dizzy sensors can still be used to control the coil on plug packs.

There are definitely advantages but the stock single coil has been proven beyond 300whp, how much further do you want to go? :p

Easier swap that will yield the same benefits for a starlet for considerably less money is converting to wasted spark. You could use the coil packs from the 4agze or another popular choice is mitsi evo based coils. I've got a pair of wasted spark coils from an ae101 levin here to use eventually on my build, I can't envision ever needing more than that.

I tripped over these earlier moving some stuff around in the spare room, would they be of any use?

Sure are if you've got an ECU to run them.. Plenty of standalones can directly fire a pair of coils. Won't be able to use a piggyback though.

Biggest advantage in multiple coils is the ability to run longer dwell at higher RPM's, can run a bigger spark gap for a given boost level.

There's individual coils on my setup, no cranks sensor needed, we took the signal off the exhaust cam/rotor arm.
