HAHA, problem solved.

Ben had been fed some bad information by friends or something about timing belt being loose or jumped a tooth.

Turned out the belt and timing were spot on. As i provided the engine to him as basically a crate engine so he did the fittment, i said the dizzy was only bolted finger tight and to set the ignition timing once the engine was running and tighten it all down. This was overlooked so dizzy slipped when first came on boost and went massively retarded, despite doing 1000miles running in without issue. Once Ben put it back and tightened it down it was all back to normal. :)

Glad it was a simple fix, But thought i would post before someone jumps on criticizing my engine builds lol :)

Good luck Ben

is the dizi setting not similar to the 4efte, so if you line everything up spot on the ignition timing is pretty much spot on anyway?

I think it's the same 10deg BTDC?

It was in the furthest retarded position, when we moved it back the car changed immediatley and sorted the big mis-fire when reving the engine.

yeah as long as he's happy is the main thing :)

yes 3sgte is the same as 4efte engine, you line everything up to get it about right. then you have to use the timing gun to setup to 10 BTDC. But this was a crate engine so i have no means of doing this as it needs to be done with the engine running. And without a car bolted around it i couldn't setup this part. Which is why they are left finger tight and the customer advised.

from memory you get about 25 degree's from full adjustment to full adjustment. And 10degree's BTDC normally is right at the end of advanced adjustment. So if the dizzy slips like this you loose nearlly 25degrees ignition advance, So no wander it misfires and splutters especially with the large cams.

what I was getting at is that on the 2 4efte engines I have rebuilt, my ignition timing was pretty much dead on 10 degrees after assembling it all and lining up all the marks.

which marks are you lining up buddy.

regarding the distributor all you have is the tooth alignment when the engine is at TDC assuming the cam to crank timing is setup correctly.

so with this you then have around 25 degree's of adjustment by rotating the distributor.

when I have rebuilt 4efte's I have made sure every single alignment mark is lined up and the ignition timing has been pretty much spot on 10 degrees every time.

there is an alignment mark on the distributor :)

I know there isn't anything like that on the 3sgte because its all adjustable. I don't recall seeing anything like that for the starlet either if I'm totally honest.
Do you have a picture of this so i can see what you are referring to?
