Earth cable

Evening all,

Just recently put my 4efe engine and gearbox back in the starlet, but I have a left over earth cable (probably the length of a pint glass) and I can't for the life of me remember where it went.

If anyone can help that would be muchly appreciated!

Battery to gearbox or chassis near the passenger side light ?
How many pints did you use to make the glass empty tho :)

The small black cable that has ring terminals on each end. It's not very long at all. I fixated the ground from the battery to the front chassis next to the rad.

I needed more than alcohol to get through the bitching and moaning putting it all back together.

Well, put it this way, the gearbox alone got called a c*%t more times than I've had hot dinners.

From your description, probably the earth from the top of the drivers side engine mount to the strut turret.

There is also one on the top of the gearbox to the chassis rail on the passenger side that's similar.

I've connected the one from the small D/S strut to the engine mount. Done the ground terminal (battery) to the top of the gearbox where the clutch fluid line bracket bolts down, also put the small cable in that same bit and connected it to the bracket for the air box. all connecting points had been sanded down before fitting.

The car cranks but won't fire. When I sit in the car, before I put the key in the ignition, the temperature gauge sits high (way past the red line) then it will come down to cold when I illuminate the dash. I'm not sure if this is due to the earths or the fact i've put in a new radiator with fresh coolant and without the engine being on it's not run everything in properly? When I crank it a few times you see it warming up like normal.

Once I take the key out, it will either sit at the bottom or rapidly go up to the point where it can't turn anymore. Sometimes the engine management light illuminates but it's pretty dim.

Check the thermostat wiring just in case the spade connector is on the incorrect sensor. I've done that before.

Theres also an earth on the inlet manifold, usually connects to the drivers side of it onto the idle stabilisation valve. That can cause issues if not 100%. It's part of the loom on a 4efte so I'm not sure where it is on a 4efe.

Here's an idea what I've pieced together as below.

There are a few cables joined to a spade at the back of the inlet manifold, the picture below is where it was before I took it out.

By thermostat cable you mean the green coolant temp sensor?

I still couldn't get it started. I removed the mazda injectors incase there was an issue with them. I could see it had primed the fuel because some fuel dribbled out the rail.
I put the oem injectors back in and no.01 pissed out with fuel when I stopped cranking.

I got fed up and give up with it in the end. Doing my head in. Still need to bleed the clutch as well and time was just not in my side. Was trying to get it all done for MOT next week and drive it to japfest, but ain't going to happen now.

No on the GT thermostat there's the green connector plus two spade connectors. If you mix the two single wires up you get a crazy temp gauge. Thought it might be relevant but the 4efe wiring might differ.

That inlet earth looks similar to the 4efte version. On a 10mm bolt just.

Only thing I can see is that the gearbox earth pic you posted looks like it's connected to the bracket and not the body. It should bolt to the chassis leg from memory. (Excuse the dodgy red scribble)

Also check you haven't put paint on the earthing surface of the gearbox casing. Can't see it being the issue but you never know. Box looks well in blue!

I'll have to have a look next time. Like I said previously all connecting points had been sanded back to bare metal. I'm sure that one cable was attached to the bracket previously but I'll relocate it to the body and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for your advice/help it's greatly appreciated.

I went back to the car earlier just to have another look wether there was an issue with spark or fuel. The spark plugs look near enough new and didn't come across as an issue before.

Then I took the injectors out with the fuel rail and cranked it. No fuel coming out. Then I noticed there's no priming noise when I turn the key.

I'm guessing the fuel pumps failed or the fuse/relay? Problem is I didn't know which one it was. If I'm correct, is it the fuse/relay indicated as "efi"? All the fuses look absolutely fine with no corrosion or fails.

I also relocated the small ground cable from that bracket and fitted it to where you circled on the body. I sanded it to bare metal but no change with anything really.
