while i was running in my forged engine it used a hell of a lot of oil...

but after a few thousand km's it doesnt use a drop:)im using ross pistons..

Not very good then, if its not leaking and it is using a lot of oil it must be getting burnt somewhere, whether it is the turbo or the engine itself.

How much usage are we talking about Gee?

I've only just fixed my two oil leaks, so just gauging use on other forged engines.

What I will do it make sure the oil is at the maximum mark on the dipstick, reset the milage counter to zero, at mark down when I need to top up.

Thing is with me, if the oil drops past the max mark, I always top up back to max.

i used to that in my old cars, however in my mini, itdropped around 3mm on dipstick and then didnt loose anymore, tuning company said its just how it was, no leaks or anything, just that the max was too much oil.

I would say only top up athalf way, thats all i do now.

it all depends on piston tolerances. If your car has street car tolerances, it should consume nothing, to maybe half a litre per 5000kms... if its race, hey, want a race car, you got to service it as a race car . If its Drag, bad luck mate.

mine is consuming lots of oil now and im very displeased because i asked the tightest tolerances to be used, according to the piston manufacturer. Now, if they fucked up somewhere, we will know. Im taking it on tuesday for a thorough checkup which might even lead to opening the engine again.

What sort of check up's can you do Aga, before determining the engine needs opening up?

I'll check my sheet to see if the tolerances are noted.

Gee I don't think you have anyone to worry about, perhaps 5w 30 is slightly too thin at operating temperature, motorway temperatures etc. I'd swap to 5w 40 and then see if there is any difference in oil consumption.

alex i feel ur pain, iv had to reopen mine twice after closing it the 1st time.. all this during running in...

alex make sure u have the correct expanders on, especially if they are total seal, i was sent the wrong expanders by total seal, even tough they where bought "job number" specific.. we had to reopen & reclean everything god damn oil.. they said they where sorry & that a mis match was made.. i mean if they knew they made the mistake, why the fuck did they send them?!

anyways, to continue with the topic discussion, its not the pistons that affect, its the rings, if u use total seal ull never loose a drop of oil, even at max/min tollerances.. stock forged rings tend to need more time & use a little oil at times.. with my stock ross rings i used to burn up 0.5L with every oil change ie at 2500kms... but we built it like that as it helps run more boost with more easy by keeping the cylinder slightly lubricated ;) theres alot to learn about engine tollerances & building for power ;)

kon:cool:

When is comes to gapping the rings and Ross pistons, does anyone know if the spec sheet detailed 'RRR turbo specification' ?

Anyone?

Keep an eye out for leaks, they like to leak around the dizzi area also which can go un noticed.

You might be on to something. Noticed oil on the underside of the dizzy. Don't want to mess with it thou, I don't like fucking with electrics!
