Take out your dial cluster in the car and get someone to turn the speedo cable on the outside and look if its turning at the other end on the inside of the car. you have probably pulled it through too far when you removed the engine and gear box and its not sticking through far enough inside the car. I had this issue when i fitted a speed convertor your cable is probly fine ther just a pain in the ass. Its a matter of getting enough cable sticking out each end. Make sure the outer cover for the cable at the gearbox end is pushed as far into its metal holder as possible this was what caused my probs.

Iv done that and it sticks out far enough on both sides, it's the little cable thing that cOmes out of the gearbox that doesn't turn the speedo drive because iv had the drive apart itself to see if it turns the two cogs inside it and it doesn't so I know their isn't any issue with the cable.

cheers for the advice tho

That sounds like a speedo converter. Have you tried removing that and connecting the speedo cable directly to the gearbox?

Yeah that's what I mean, the little black thing that sits on top of the gearbox n the speedo cable screws onto it, n no I havent

Take off the convertor and put ur speedo cable directly into the gearbox and see if it works then. If it does you need a new convertor. If not then you probly just need to mess about with the cable a little more. I found taking out the convertor and pushing as much cable towards the dials as i could then putting the convertor on the cable was the best way. Once you have the convertor on the cable turn the wee bit that goes into the gearbox and check if it turns inside the car. Then screw the convertor onto the gearbox and clip the cable onto you dials. DO NOT put the convertor on the gearbox before you have attached the cable its more hassle than its worth.

I havnt read all the other posts but thought I would stick my thoughts in, I have this problem and mine is the actual clutch, the clutch wasn't lined up properly so when the shaft got put in it moved it, if u try all the other things people have said and they don't work try looking at the clutch, if the centre of the clutch moves when u put your finger in it then it will be the same problem as mine, I have changed release on mine aswell recent, hope this helps

I did the putting the cable onto te converter before i pusshed it onto the gearbox and still nothing, i tried just putting the converter on the box without the cable attatched and it spins with no problems and have got the foggest what it could be now

Been for a drive to check if the speedo works and it doesn't work

Well either the cable isn't installed correctly, or there's a problem with the cable or speedo.

Take the cable off the gearbox and attach a cordless drill to it, gently run the drill and see if anything registers on the speedo. If you get nothing then pull the gauge unit out of the car and drive the back of the speedo with the cordless drill, if it registers a speed then you probably need a new speedo cable.

Iv tested the speedo cable if its free and it is i think that it might be the converter its self because where u put it on the gearbox it was slightly abit baggyish so i think i might just buy a new converter or does the uk starlets have the same conector for the cable to the gearbox that ill be able to use

Is it a kph - mph converter? The speedo never moved on mine until 15mph ish with the converter fitted. Just thinking it mightnt register if only idling in 1st.
Take it off & run it straight to the box as said in posts above & see if it helps.

Yeah im guessing its a kmh - mph converter because the dials still go up to 180

I took it for a run and got it up to roughly about 60mph but still nothing is registaring on the speedo and i tried to conect it straigh to the gearbox but i cant see anything tha the cable screws onto because theres just like a piece of like metal cable coming out of the box so how could i put the cable directly onto the box?

The cable attaches to the gearbox in the same way that the converter does, the cable would have originally been fitted to the gearbox when the car left the factory.

That piece of 'metal cable' is likely part of the drive for the converter, have you tried to pull it out?

No, didn't think to pull it out tbh, thought it was attached to the gearbox or something in the box it's self, I'll check if I can pull it out in the morning, hopefully it is that what you say

may sound silly, but has the end of speedo cable snapped off?that would explain why you cant attach it to the gearbox properly

No, well I don't think it has anyway, it's got like a extra bit to fit into a slot on the converter on the end of the cable

is there anyway you can take a picture of the end of the cable and the coverter?it would speak a thousand words if u had a picture buddy

The gearbox will have the same 'slot'. The fitting on the gearbox will be the same as the fitting on the converter, you just need to pull that piece of 'metal cable' out first.

Pictures to help.

The speedo cable.

The converter

and the bit wire thats sits into the gearbox

Iv checked the wire in the converter its self and it seems abit baggy and doesnt turn the converter at all, i checked the converter out with a screw driver to make sure the converter does turn, so i need another one of those wires things (the 1 in the last photo) that sits in the gearbox.

Does anyone know where i can buy one from or do i have to buy it with the converter??

I also put the speedo cable into the gearbox to make sure it does read on the speedo its self and it does

Iv sorted it now and the speedo works fine :D thank god,

All i did was remove the clip that the cable sits into the converter and glued it onto the cable so i wasnt trying to find the slot on the end of the cable and i put the converter directly onto the box and screwed the cable on that way.

Thanks for your help guys :D
