Help stopping buyers been scammed.

On another forum that I use the odd time there is a system in place where to enable a member to sell any goods in the classifieds they must become an Elite member. To become an Elite member you need to be met by a (iirc) a few other elite members or moderators at a meet.

I know this is impossible to put in place with members living abroad where there is no meets happening but Ive seen alot of threads recently with people taken the money and not sending the paid items out.

In fairness, It is too easy to register on this site, to pretend you own a GT, to ask technical questions etc... then after few weeks when your posts get up above 50 you "decide" to break your GT and then get money and disappear.

About the Elite member suggestion, I think something similar should be put in place:)

Well TBH mate i bought a few things off members i dont know at all (example KrissyB who kept the turbo for me for a month before i picked it up and payed for it) in which we didnt have any problems at all, but recently i have seen a rise in the number of threads where people are not receiving parts etc so something needs to be done as personally i have lost faith in buying parts off members

Aidan thats a very good suggestion, or maybe something like they need to send in a copy of their driving license or something or some sort of ID which helps verify people even more ??

IDK but your idea is pretty good :)

think its a good idea Aidan or maybe get some more details from people when they register on the site like main phone number or address least admin would have other means of contact if people get scammed

It's by no means foolproof mate.

I met and almost approved Kitaro FFS..

So basically approved and recognised sellers only, everyone else can feck off to Ebay?

Discuss.

Only if I the mods get a pension scheme and annual leave entitlement.

Please remember this isn't a day job for any of us. There are limits as to what we can do. We could also leave ourselves open to legal requirements from the data protection act with that level of info-gathering..

Would you trust Frankie with your name, address and photo? :haha:

I think thats a bit optimistic idea tbh.

I have just sold a fair few parts. All to people I don't know, although Jamie is a bit of an exception although never met him before. And I'm pretty sure the buyers will be pleased with the items and should definately be pleased with me as a seller, I'm delivering 2 of them personally while down in London while I live in Aberdeen, although the trip isn't just for that obviously, but it's an extra hour on an 10 hour drive already.

If the proposed idea was to be put in place I wouldn't be able to sell at all, and I generally keep in contact with folk I've sold to before because they know I don't sell shit and I get on with them after I've dealt with them.

What happened to the trader feedback proposal that I saw a bit ago?

Thats only if Frankie will pay me a visit i will lol

I know what your saying Jay, but there must be an easy solution to resolving this, recently there has been quite a few posts about not receiving items etc :(

I have seen action being taken by mods on these mebers in which all fairness you are doing your best, just looking for a way in which maybe we can prevent this kinda thing happening ;)

I don't think meeting someone will do anything, or having their address.

realistically, anybody can show up at a meet and be nice and get approved

once approved anybody can just not send an item, are we going to rely on whoever has met them/a mod to go to their house etc and look for the part or the money?

and police would regard it as a civil matter,

the only method i can invisige working is that an escrow service instead of paypal is used or COD

Hang on, just realised I might get showered with false compliments, undeserved backhanders and scandalous gifts to approve people.

When do we start? :haha:

@Jay- :haha:

cod -Cash On Delivery (when buyer picks up etc)

escrow was used quite alot on ebay up until ebay bought over paypal, basically you have an account with the escrow website v.similar to your paypal one, you pay the seller the money but it doesn't come available to the seller until you have recieved the item (there is no advantage in saying you haven't got it as you have already payed the money and if a dispute arises its handled v.smilarly to paypal's)
If an escrow site was to be used it should only be the one recommended by tgtt.com to avoid fake sites etc

useful link http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/pay/escrow.html

I think that tgtt.com should have a "safe buyers policy" and it or a link to it should become part of the sales template.

Mainly to highlight certain areas of risk, what the admin can do, the tgtt recommended payment methods, a link to the sales feedback section etc and any other stuff the admin thought should go in. In an easy to read, well layed out format.

It's a public forum and over moderating would probably have no affect anyway, people scam all the time, and the scammers normally don't give a shit if you know who they are or not as they know if you paid by bank transfer or other methods nothing can be done.

apologies for the long windedness (if that's a word)
