I'm using the lowest octane (regular). This is our commuter car, so like I said, I am actually slowly taking the parts off rather than trying to make it faster.

Do you know what is the RON on the regular Octane in Japan? A lot of people on this forum would be intersted to find out!

It's a 99 Glanza V (I think) with manual gear box. It has about 100,000km on the clock.

As far as gas, I don't remember the octane ratings, but I'll check the next time I go fill up.

I heard there is some kind of a law in Japan something about high mileage cars over 100 000 km? or is it just a rumour?

Kind of. It has less to do with miles and more about the year of the car. Basically as the car starts getting older the tax you have to pay on the car every year gets more and more expensive. You also have to do shaken every two years which is quite expensive. Older cars will require more parts to be replaced and so many people get rid of them and get new cars.

Is a shaken some sort of inspection that gets done? We have a system in the UK called an M.O.T. where the car goes through a set inspection to check its road worthy. Its done every year once its over 4 years old, some modifications can cause havoc during it. Can you shed any light on whats involved in a shaken?

Sorry to bombard you with questions but we dont have to many Japanese residents on the site whos English is as good as yours!

£860 equivalent!

What a bargain for a 98 spec with that mileage in that condition.

Normal price for that here (in usd) is about $4,800 - $6500!

They are so cheap in Japan, all you have to do is look on auction sites! It's only when they get imported they get the typical UK tax slapped on them.
I thought fuel in Japan was 102 RON.

Shakken is a type of inspection that is done every two years. It sounds similar to MOT. I did my roadster last year and it cost me about $400 to do it myself. Handing it over to a shop would have cost a lot more. Most of that fee is weight tax (sperate from yearly car tax). Mods can definitely be a problem, and it won't pass if everything isn't exactly according to the rules.

As far as octane, I forgot to look even though I was out and about. I will try to look tomorrow.

Great to have a 'man in Japan' again!

Car looks great and I wish you well with it mate. The shaken doesn't actually sound as bad as we have been told previously.

Enjoy the site,

Jay

Thanks for all the welcomes, and sorry about the octane. I had planned to go into town today, but ended up building a cabinet instead and just after I finished my new rims and tires showed up so I ended up installing those instead. Then I had to wash the car. I then had to clean out a place to put the old rims. I'll try to check the octane tomorrow or the next day.

Here are the new rims and tires!

100RON is what we all believed the fuel was, I had no idea there was also a Regular at 90RON.

This is really strange.... 90 RON????? We don't even have such RON for sale in the UK, 95 is the minimum! May be it's a different RON system or something like in America?

Welcome to the site, I'm sure you'll get what you need on here (together with lots of requests for you to send your shiny aftermarket parts over here). So, whereabouts are you in Japan then? Where are you originally from?
