** How to 'Run' a 4efte Engine **

use millers running in oil, its some good stuff.. ;)
also change the oil filter every time you do the oil, thats a must.
change oil as often as possible during running in. 100 miles, 200, 400, 800. etc. as much as you can to get rid of the bedding in materials .

If everything is done correctly there shouldnt be ANY bedding in material.

Thats only really needed if you have new cams etc. If not then you dont need to do this.

Leaving an engine to idle for long periods isn't a good idea anyway, if the engine is going to be left running after the initial start up it's best to bring the idle up to ensure it gets good coolant circulation and sufficient oil pressure.

For the first 50 miles or so, don't drive like a grandad and likewise don't screw the balls out of the engine either, allow a couple of complete heat cycles and keep a close eye on the fluid levels for any leaks. Most importantly as Skalabala has said, the AFR's need to be correct, thrashing a rebuilt engine that's running lean will likely render the rebuild a pointless waste of time, effort and money.

If after the first 50 miles the engine is still in one piece and not making any odd noises, you should be good to go and drive it how you please. If your taking the 'hard' run in approach then I would advise frequent oil changes every 200 miles or so for the first 1000 miles, use a reasonable quality mineral oil and keep a constant check on the oil level. Replacing the filter at every oil change during the run in period isn't necessary, all your doing is ensuring the mineral based oil is performing at it's best when subjected to the increased operating temperatures that occur whilst running in an engine.

I will only let the engine idle for extended time if there has been some strange engineering work or something done to it.
Like I once had to make a custom 5mm thick thrust washer for an VW engine, I took things really easy at first :p
But if an engine was built right it should be completely run in by about 50km, especially on boosted cars it runs in a lot faster due to the higher ring to wall pressure.
I would also recommend to use only OEM oil filters, or whatever brand you guys overseas have better than OEM :)
