I need some help folks.....

mine looked really lean. but wideband said very rich on boost so happy days.
i thought i had a fuel blockage but it was fuel starvation going round right hand turns on a track with low fuel. caused the ecu to sort of make the car run safe- it suddenly went like a standard ecu or worse.

does yours spit on gearchanges? ( good indication of running nice and rich)

Som the only way really to tell by the plugs is to fit a new set, warm her up, blast it at full throttle and while doing so switch the engine off, come to a stop and then check the plugs.
They run lean on deceleration, that is why they are mostly white when you look at them, as you know.
If they are very white, with what looks like bubbles from boiling on the ceramic insulator, that would be a sign you are running lean at full power.
It could be a few of your sensors were not working properly if you did not have the earth on the box corrected properly, it can lead to poor spark as well.

hey john, cheers for that...

there seems to be little crystals forming on the metal part of the plug at the bottom, none on the insulator....

tell me, would the gearbox earth cause this?

The main battery earth was connected to the gearbox just under the hydraulic line, beside the battery, and the proper gearboc earth to the chasis, was not connected at all....

It was only earlier that i noticed it....

I also noticed that the gearbox earth not being connected properly led to the car not going into diagnostic mode at all.

cheers

Its the main engine earth the one on the box. The throttle sensors mostly seem to be affected by removing the earth at the end of the throttle body, although DC will always find earth, any way it can.
I would not like to say for deffinate, but those little crystals on the plugs could be metal that has lifted of the crown of the pistons, due to running lean.
I would deffinately tickle her along for a while until you get things checked out at Jays.
You could have cured your problem with the earth but better to be safe and all mate.
I have read it again there, are you talking about the 2 wires that come from the clamp of the negative battery terminal being the wrong way round, or have you 1 wire from the clamp that goes to the box and then to the chassis?

jesus, don't be saying that mate....

metal from pistons....scary thought!

I have 1 wire going to the chasis and another to the gearbox, from the negative terminal.

then a single fairly thin wire, running from the box to the chasis.

that sound about rite?

That sounds right to me.
If the connection to the box was on and the connection to the chassis was off, you did have a good earth on the engine, that is the important one in my opinion.
Just a thought the metal crystals mate, probably wrong that its from the crown of the pistons.

Ill just toot along in her till i get it sorted...

the other thing is, the plug in it now are the plugs that came with the engine, so i dont know how old they are, but they were in fairly good shape when we checked them...NGK iridiums...

Ill get some very detailled photos of them tomorro and you can have another look.

Cheers john!

After switching those earths, everythings fine....

Diagnostic is showing no faults,

and i took weejohns advice, drove it hard, cut the engine and checked the plugs.

They are brown again.

Still wont be happy till the wideband is put on her....

....but it would seem that dodgy earths can land you in a world of shit.
